Picture by Tom Graham (1840-1906) engraved by the Dalziels in Good Words, for a poem “Reconciled” by English poet Jean Ingelow.

The reconciliation is between—well, that would spoil the surprise, but you can go read the poem, it won’t fit here.

Thomas was known for his careful attention to light and detail and it shows.

💒 A wedding! Margrethe Dagmar 💑 married King Waldemar Scier of Denmark, in 1206. (Margaret and King Valdemar II)

John, later Sir John Tenniel was a cartoonist for Punch, best known now for Alice in Wonderland drawings, also engraved by Dalziel Ltd.

There is a ballad about it - see link.

This illustration by John Tenniel, engraved at the studio of the Dalziel brothers, shows the Margrethe Dagmar and the groom, King Waldemar Seier (the Victorious), of Denmark, in the year 1206 C.E.

Note: they are also called in English Queen Margaret and King Valdemar II.

In the background, Danish ships for going a-viking, and soldiers, warriers, with their spears for poking and hurling.

The king has a little crown on top of his helmet, a robe, an elephant pendant, leather scale mail, and undershirt with a fetching border and that reveals his bare manly knees, intricate leggings and close-fitting soft boots.

The queen also has a crown, long hair reaching own her back over her floor-length gown with its intricately-woven border, and a long dress beneath. There are bridesmaids in attendance behind her with flowers in their hair.

They are on the beach, and a suicidal starfish looks on in the foreground.

Picture: Thomas Morten (1836‒1866) (yes, died at 30) engraved by Dalziel brothers, to accompany a poem, An Orphan’s Family Christmas, by Gerald Massey. See link for poem

They were so poor they had no turnspit (clockwork meat spit)! it was a major part of the industrial revolution.

The Dalziel studio also engraved the Alice in Wonderland pics

This picture, by Thomas Morten, was engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. It shows a woman and two children sitting near a lit fireplace, their heavy clothing suggesting the house is not warm. One child holds a sprig of holly, but there do not seem to be presents or a tree.

In the background, the giant tongs or andirons go with the hook dangling from the mantelpiece, for roasting meat. Wealthier families would have a clockwork “turnjack” rather than have a turnspit-boy stand by the fire and turn the meat every few minutes, needed to get an even roast.

The clockwork roasting spit was one of the inventions that made the industrial revolution possible, by freeing up children’s time for going to school and learning.

A bookplate is a pre-printed label people would stick inside their books so when people borrowed them, they knew where to return them. “Ex libris” is also used for a bookplate, being Latin for from the library of.

This Jugendstile (Art Nouveau) one was made by Otolia Kraszewska, a Polish artist.

Update: the name at the bottom is Lily von Poschinger - thanks, @ajinkyapdahale

This black and white engraved bookplate shows a seated princess, her posture very regal, holding a bowl from which another woman is drinking. The words EX LIBRIS appear on an arch behind them. giant irises bloom suggestively, and some letters are partly visible, perhaps from the Latin Veritas (truth) or more likely Vernal meaning of Spring.

The league here is probably the Ligue Catholique or Sante Ligue, and relates to opposition to king Henri IV of France, who was Protestant.

This #chromolithography example shows the inside of the chapel St. John’s College Cambridge. This picture was made around 1840; later, in 1860, the chapel was demolished & replaced with a Victorian Gothic Revival thing by Sir Gilbert Scott.

At least six colours here i think, so 6 plates, although sometimes they overprinted to get mixed colours.

The chapel was quite large, with a huge stained glass East window over the altar, a heavy ceiling with prominent wooden beams, but almost flat, and benches down the middle. This is a colour lithograph from 1840, 20 years before it was demolished.

Artist Eugène Viollet-le-Duc (1814 – 1879) was known for his reconstructions of mediæval French ruins; Coucy, shown here, however, was not a ruin until German Soldiers left it towards the end of WOrld War I, and demolished most of it, 15 years after this drawing was made.

The perspective on the top of the tower makes me slightly uneasy 🙂

An architectural diagram today - how to draw a gothic window. Or how to design one.

The left side shows the fully-drawn window and the right some of the construction. Not all, though, by any means, so you need some creativity here!

I bought the book at a shop near San Jose years ago - i started walking to it down El Camino Boulevard & gave up, took a taxi!

I checked some early photos, all the way to 1910 or so, and indeed the firemen in Constantinople were generally barefoot. It seems not an occupation well suited to bare feet!

A group of barefoot men rush through busy streets at a run. They are all barefoot, and only their leader has a shirt; he also has a jacket and carries what seems to be a short ceremonial spear, and perhaps is shouting.

The men following at his heels have pumping engines perhaps a metre (a yard) on a side, on pols which they carry on their bare shoulders, for men to a pumping engine. They appear all to be running in perfect step.

A chapterhead from c. 1897, with an owl spreading wings, unobtrusive dragon-heads, & hands holding.. what exactly? Whips?

The image was frustratingly wonky, and the experimental n-point deformation tool in GIMP is not up to unwonkifying it, alas. Because it’s a pretty wild image 🙂

The border features an owl with wings spread, just behind the space for the words; that space ends on weither side with serpent or dragon heads. There is a cresent moon on each side, and a thistle, and beneath the space for text are two wrists and hands holding maybe magic wands or sticks that end in many snakes, or they could be ropes or wires with knots at the end, scourges used to whip people.

The new chain of office for the Mayor of Wiesbaden (in 1897).

This is one of those times that scanning in high resolution is a real win, despite the image being over 13x9 inches in the book.

Fabulous how the engraver managed to capture the solidity and 3d nature of the object here.

This overall “hexagram” is a star of David (six-pointed star made from two triangles crossed) inscribed in a circle, so the points of the star just touch the circle.

The “sigil” in the bottom triangle is garbled Hebrew; see the link below for a 16th C. MS. that may’ve been the source.

Obviously with Greek, Latin, English, this was not used by Solomon!

This overall “hexagram” is a star of David (six-pointed star made from two triangles crossed) inscribed in a circle, so the points of teh staf just touch the circle.

In the space between the circle and the Star of David we have the letters A G L A and the Greek letters Alpha “Α” and Omega “Ω”.

Alpha and Omega is a name for God and Jesus given in the Book of Revelation.

In the triangles made by the points of the star are distribted the letters of the word “Tetragrammaton” which is the four-letter name of God.

In the bottom triangle are two mis-drawn Hebrew letters described below.

There is a cross on each point of the start, sitting outside the circle. The cross was made a symbol of Jesus in the fourth century by the emperor Constantine, even though the Gospels had Jesus crucified on a post or pole, not a cross.

In the centre is a Greek letter tau, but here drawn more as a beheaded cross, with squares for nails for hands and feet, and the word “TAU” beneath it.

The first London underground railway (now affectionately called the tube); the 1870 newspaper article about it is in the description in the first Web link above.

It was narrow-gauge, 2'6", and would have been more cramped than the third picture suggests.

Here we see people lining up to experience the first underground railway in London. There seems to have been a single carriage, dvided into first and second class, and pulled by a steel wire connected to an outside steam engine.A workman sits in a rather small “omnibus” or railway carriage, seemingly outside the door on a bench, his booted feet resting on an extension of the carriage floor that reaches two railway wheels. This was a narrow-gauge train. He is not well lit, but through the glass window in the wooden door behind him we see people inside the carriage itself. The inside of the carriage, with seated passengers, including a lady in a formal gown, men with top hats, a woman with a muffler to warm her hands, and a boy in school uniform with his bag and his phone. The carriage is lit by a single oil lamp, and seems much wider in this picture than it really was, since the tunnel itself was only six feet eight inches at its widest, and the carriage would have been quite a bit narrower in order to fit safely inside.
