The Jockeying for tables has started!
The admonishment for fouls has started.
The fools are still queueing, thou.

_The Evening Post_, 14 April 1925:
BY RAIL AND BOAT
EASTER TRAVELLING
HOLIDAYS AND MATRIMONY
Railway travelling this #Easter has been on about the average of last Easter, a “Post” reporter was informed to-day, in spite of the fact that children have been debarred from moving about the Dominion. The new #booking arrangements, which make it possible to reserve seats for long distance journeys fourteen days before the journey is to be undertaken, have worked very satisfactorily at the Central Booking Office, for whereas it has always been necessary previously to form intending passengers into queues—very impatient queues at that—on the last two or three days prior to the holidays, this Easter’s bookings have been spread out over the best part of the fortnight available, and at no time has there been any great rush of business, with its consequent waste of time to those in the queue and inevitable irritation and dissatisfaction.
Long distance trips appear to have been popular this Easter, and heavy and full trains have run between Wellington and Auckland…

Someone asked me this afternoon “Is this the line for the cable car?”

I replied “I’m not sure. I’m #British, I just saw a queue so stood in it.”

The person asking just looked confused, but a lady two spots down from her overheard and burst out laughing, before giving me a big grin.

It was indeed the cable car queue, as I explained a moment later to the person who had asked, once I’d finished amusing myself.

Well I thought it was funny at least! And quick, I think you’ll find. 😁

Why don’t we talk more about queueing theory.

Taiwanese logic is when "the longer the queue the higher the tea quality" rings true, trust me on this. I think this was in Siwen village. #bubbletea #queueing #taipei #斯文里 #大同區 #台北 #臺灣 #taiwan
A tea shop on a street in Taipei, with a queue of people who are waiting to order or have already ordered their bubble tea. Above the counter there is a number display in LED matrix style that shows the number 184, and various signs and hand-written posters that show Chinese characters are attached to the facade above the crowd. It is warm, many are wearing short pants, and there is a relaxed atmosphere to it.

That tool I wrote some years ago because you couldn’t be arsed to find a #batch #queueing and capacity management tool? It’s being rehabilitated to work with present-day versions of tools and libraries.

I hope you’re happy, #developers. Enjoy your hollow victory over many years of refusing to address #technicaldebt. I will be keeping the #receipts.

"Members of the British public have chosen to trample on decades – nay, centuries – of tradition. That’s right – people have started queueing in pubs."

Things I'll probably never understand about #queueing while #traveling:

People that stand up at the earliest sign of boarding and wait in line at a closed #airport gate and don't just chill in the chairs until the line moves and is a bit shorter.

Surely you'll all get the seat you've been assigned? This isn't the USA after all...

(Families with kids I can somewhat understand)

The Boygenius fans have been out early, in today’s weather both foul and fair. #Fans #Devotees #Souvenir #WereInLove #TrueBlue #Queue #Queueing #LineUp #gigs #Boygenius #Dublin #RoyalHospitalKilmainham

Long distance shot from above: a milky grey sky. Modern buildings with glass and varied facades on the horizon. A wall of full-leafed trees in the mid-ground. A tall abstract wood sculpture. In front, on a lawn corralled between lanes of temporary fencing, a hundred or so young people line-up waiting on a concert to start.

A few hours ago we moved the last trickle of jobs over to latency-based queues. We're slotting into one of:

* within_30_seconds
* within_5_minutes
* within_1_hour
* within_24_hours

We've hit a few snags - blowing those SLAs when slow jobs clog the works, starvation, unable to detect and auto-scale the lower latency queues fast enough, etc… Those problems were always there, but we didn't "see” them, and so didn't address/talk about them. Now we see them. And fix them.

Next was an interesting talk by Eva Tardos on learning in strategic #queueing systems. I don't think I've thought about queueing since undergrad, but it's always fascinating how small tweaks in approaches can yield massive gains in performance youtube.com/watch?v=l2bvbCyl2T (3/6)

So I am attempting to understand Queueing Theory that is more advanced than Little's Law and of course came across Defunctland's history of Disney's FastPass. I had a big guffaw when they showed an excerpt of a M/M/1 paper, scoffed at how you'd have to hire an engineering team "just to get to the bottom of this incredibly niche curiosity..." and then they do just that. So great.
