I have a special fondness for California Quails (any quails, really). Here, Mom stands with her two chicks on a branch; a handsome family portrait if ever there was one. 🤎 🤎 🤎

The photographer is Chris Johnson.

Two little California Quail chicks stand on a branch beside their Mom. The chicks have not developed the distinctive head plume yet, but the adult has her feathery plume sweeping gently forward, as is typical of quails.

Here’s the male strutting around for his lady and a shot of the happy couple together. I wish I lived across the street because those people get the quail in their backyards all the time and it’s only rarely that they cross the street and visit me 🥺
Ok let me remember my #borb and #quorb hashtags this time!

A male California quail struts back and forth protecting his mate in case I get up to anything funnyThe quail couple are up on a fence rail watching me. The female has a superb round figure and is just too cute

Friday nights are for remembering all the #quorb you saw this week.

Photo of a wonderfully round, grey, feathery crystal ball of a ground bird with a breast quilted with rows of little cream crescents that flush dark red in a central patch on the lower belly. The bird, a California quail, is giving us full frontal quorbitude as e perched on two chickenlike feet atop the top metal railing of a chain-link fence against a backdrop of more red-slatted chain link. E is looking coyly away from us, to eir right, showing us the charming white racing stripes that both cross eir forehead just over eir cookie-dough-colored eyebrows and run in outline from jaw to chin around eir beautiful ebony face. A thin-stemmed plume of glossy black feathers springs out of eir forehead and dangles over eir short bill like mistletoe. E is a fantastic bird.

Totoro left the biggest acorns I've ever seen beneath the oak tree. #quorb

Photo of a patch of sunny grass edging a mound of moss and woodsy detritus out of which the trunk of a relatively young but mighty oak tree grows. Gathered around the foot of the oak are about ten plump, brown and grey orbs marked with dozens of thin, cream-colored crescents and quill-like lines like tailors' markings. Some of the orbs show off sweet faces with little punctuation-like pull tabs of feathery plume curling up from their foreheads. These orbs are a little bevy of California quail.

My neighbor yesterday, dressed for success and waiting at the curb for the quail bus. #quorb

Photo of a plump, orb-like male California quail standing in right-facing profile on a grey curb in front of a sunny patch of sere grass and leafy detritus in the early morning light. Eir body is that lovely, matte slate grey with a pattern of little cream-colored upside down half-moons or the lower smiles of the "close this up" proofreading symbol in dense, creamy quilling on eir belly and, more openly spaced, eir sides. This lovely stitchlike pattern warms to a dark russet patch in the center of eir belly--a flash of fiery boldness in the otherwise gentle figure of this round, feathered grapefruit of a bird. Eir face is focused and far-seeing, a rich, velvety black framed with racing stripes of white that curve under eir chin and across eir forehead like a runner's sweatband. And of course e is "wearing" eir signature black cap with the bold quotation mark of a plume that curls out and down over the center of eir forehead like the opening of a question. E is waiting patiently on eir two plain feet for what the day will bring.

#Quorb with a snow moustache!

Photo of a plump female California quail--a wonderful slate-blur and brown bird with creamy, quill-like markings on eir breast and wings--sitting up in a curved, slightly budding maple branch in my backyard. The branch is banked with nearly half a foot of snow, which flanks the quail on either side. Our lady quail has eir back to us and has just turned away from snacking on the snowbank on eir right to look over eir right shoulder towards us. The little quotation mark of eir forehead crest looks demure and childlike, and eir stubby bill is covered in an icy fuzz of snow.
The photo has been heavily filtered to add light, as the white of the snowing sky, the branches, and all around has otherwise done impossible things to visibility and color in the photo.

I'm planning to do everything this year by the light of an afternoon #quorb.

Photo of female California quail standing in left-facing profile on the top rail of my silvery chain-link fence, my neighbor's juniper hedge and wooden fence in soft focus behind her. The wonderful, grey-brown quail is very plump and round in the winter air and the late afternoon sun is limning her crown and back with a golden glow that echoes the creamy stitching and quilling of the markings on her breast and wings. Her creamy covert feathers also catch the light and glow underneath the flat duckbill of her grey tail as though the sun shines, quite literally, out of her behind. Her face is small and drawn back into her speckled throat and neck, the tiny apple-stem of her crest feathers sticking up quirkily and her small, pursed bill gentle and thoughtful in front of the quiet black bead of her eye. What a plump, golden apple of the sun.

Saw some #quorb photos here so I think I should create something like this. Didn't hear about California quails before but they are really cool and look fun. Fluffy and round 💗

Realistic drawing of a big, very round bird sitting on a thick tree branch. The bird has grey and white feathers on head, ash grey on chest and shiny golden on its belly. It has brush-shaped feathers on its forehead. It's depicted from front side, tail not visible, head turned to right side of picture.

Maybe 70 California quail! In the backyard #BirdCallOut #Quorb

Photo of a small sea of earthy dark grey and brown orbs stitched with short, quill-like creamy stripes and punctuated by the occasional white-framed black face and forehead bobble, all foraging around in the soggy, pale green grass and dark, sodden leaf litter of a somewhat suburban back yard. It is a bevy of an enormous amount of plump, scrabbling quorbs.

Sometimes the world lets you have a little flirty #quorb, as a treat.

Close photo of an almost unbelievably round, plumped up quail standing in damp, leafy grass, facing the camera and cocking eir head coquettishly to eir left. Eir chickenlike feet are posed demurely together in ballet's first position, and they reach up like a little stand on which rests the full globe-y glory of body of the quail, which is a wonderful slatey grey with a sort of basket of gold scales about midway down, as though the beautifully plump fruit of em has been nestled in one of those soft foam nets that Asian pears rest in in the grocery stores here. Eir brown wings are tucked with epic aplomb behind em, and e is looking at us out of eir flirty eye, which rests under eir bushy bronze unibrow set in the gorgeous glossy black of eir face, thin, white racing stripes demarcating a circle that wraps under eir chin and makes a band over eir eyebrow. Above this little sporty sweatband, the crowning glory of the quail puffs up: a short brown pompadour with a lick of arcing plumage that swoops up and over like the short feathery lantern of a lanternfish, only made of shadows. Eir coy look is a absolute invitation to adore em.
