Savannah Sparrows are brown above and white below, with crisp streaks throughout. Their upperparts are brown with black streaks, and the underparts are white with thin brown or black streaks on the breast and flanks. Look for a small yellow patch on the face in front of the eye.

this one is on a canvas strap, and the crown feathers are not puffed out.

Red Bellied Woodpecker in a maple tree is clinging to the underside of the end of a branch.

Visible is the red on the belly and on the back of the neck

I heard some splashing in my pool this morning, figured the birds were having a bath and cooling off.

The splashing went on a little too long and I had to go save this little one. It's now resting in the shade, regathering its strength.

Voting is open for the Australian #BirdOfTheYear. I'm taking it on a day-by-day basis, as we have too many great birds to pick only one.

Today I went with the whip-bird - these elusive yet ever-present little things can be commonly heard on forest fringes. Did you know the call is actually a two-parter? The male does the long query, and the female does the two-beat response! Love that for them.

Despit hearing them everywhere, I've only gotten to see one once - in the coastal heathland of the Royal NP.
