#rakan

A small Rakan statue we encountered whilst hiking up Mount Misen on Miyajima Island. Unbothered by their snow cap, keeping nice and warm with a knitted beanie.

Between 1922-25 the temple was moved from Higashiyama -where successive floods had done untold damage to its old buildings and treasures- to the foothills of Mt Atago.

In spite of this, typhoons in 1945 and 1950 tore through the temple and it came close to complete closure.

All of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji's statues are unique. Made leading up to the 1980s many have a distinctive of-the-time feel, such as this arhat holding a Walkman. The main hall of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji.Playful stone statue holding up an oni mask (and sticking its tongue out). Many of the temple's statues are covered in moss, which only adds to the atmosphere.

In 1955 Nishimura Kōchō (西村公朝) became head priest of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji (愛宕念仏寺) and immediately set about reviving the temple.
With a background in art and restoring Buddhist statuary, Kōchō realised that statues might hold the key to restoring the temple's fortunes.
