Between 1922-25 the temple was moved from Higashiyama -where successive floods had done untold damage to its old buildings and treasures- to the foothills of Mt Atago.

In spite of this, typhoons in 1945 and 1950 tore through the temple and it came close to complete closure.

All of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji's statues are unique. Made leading up to the 1980s many have a distinctive of-the-time feel, such as this arhat holding a Walkman.

In 1955 Nishimura Kōchō (西村公朝) became head priest of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji (愛宕念仏寺) and immediately set about reviving the temple.
With a background in art and restoring Buddhist statuary, Kōchō realised that statues might hold the key to restoring the temple's fortunes.
