Dr. Refaat Alareer was a Palestinian writer, poet, translator, university professor and activist from the occupied Gaza Strip. On December 6, 2023, he was murdered by an Israeli airstrike along with his brother, sister and their children in Israel's ongoing genocidal siege of Gaza of 2023.

Oct. 26th: Expenses for 2 weeks before the "ceasefire"!
"So much has happened since our last update. On October 9th, a so called ceasefire was launched but never implemented by the military occupation. Unfortunately, in the bombings on Oct 19th, Ammar Zaneen was killed through bombings in Zawayde when he was out looking for his dad. Leaving his parents devastated and the whole camp sad, Ammar was martyred at the age of 14 years old, just one day after he started his school year. His dream was to be a doctor and was top of his class. We pray that God gives his family patience and that his soul rests in peace.
This update is the two weeks before the "ceasefire"."

"It has been 12 days since our last update and so much has happened since then. As many of you might know, the famine in Gaza accelerated with all community kitchens stopping in this weekend. Throughout the last 12 days we have managed to provide one meal a day to the families in the camp but we are unsure what we will be able to provide over the next week so we need your support now more than ever."

Refaat Alareer (1979 - 2023)
est un militant, écrivain, traducteur et professeur palestinien.
Éminent universitaire et poète palestinien, il a été tué par une frappe aérienne israélienne le 6 décembre 2023 à Gaza.
Professeur de littérature à l’université islamique de Gaza, Refaat Alareer a inspiré une génération d’écrivains palestiniens.
Sa famille a rapporté qu’il a été tué dans la maison de son frère à Gaza City, avec son frère, sa sœur et quatre de ses enfants.
Sa passion et sa foi en la littérature ont inspiré toute une génération.
Pour lui, écrire fut un acte de résistance et de libération.
Refaat Alareer a cofondé l’organisation We Are Not Numbers qui met en relation des auteurs expérimentés avec de jeunes écrivains de Gaza.
Il a dirigé deux anthologies, Gaza Writes Back (2014) et Gaza Unsilenced (2015). Auteur du célèbre poème If I must Die, hymne à l’humanité.
« Publié initialement cinq ans après la fin de l’opération Plomb durci — qui a fait plus de 1400 morts et quelque 5000 blessés du 27 décembre 2008 au 18 janvier 2009 — #GazaÉcritGaza rassemble 23 récits de #fiction rédigés par 15 jeunes, guidés par le poète palestinien et professeur de littérature #RefaatAlareer. »

"In his poem he suggests that a child might look up into the sky and see white kites flying there and imagine them to be Angels coming to bring Love back to the Earth.
"And so we connect our passion for #Palestinian lives with the sorrowful need of our Earth for heightened and deepened love from each of us.
"We will close the gathering with a parade, carrying our symbolic kites along the sidewalks of downtown Brunswick.
"We hope to see you there!"
