Intriguingly, in the clouds above the ship is a spitfire, complete with RAF roundels. Given that this stained glass is purported to date from a refit of the bar in 1938, this seems to foreshadow the pivotal role the Queen Mary would come to play in World War II as a troop-carrier, starting just two years later in 1940.

The beautiful stained glass portrait of the RMS Queen Mary in the Steps Bar on Glassford Street in Glasgow, whose Art Deco interior is said to have been inspired by the Cunard liner which was built at the John Brown shipyard in Clydebank between 1930 and 1934.

For #ThrowbackThursday here's something from my wife's side of the family. That's her aunt and uncle on the right with cousins to the left, and as you can see, this was taken aboard the RMS Queen Mary, although I don't know the year; late 60s or early 70s. My wife's cousin at the back and left is a keen cruiser like us to this day, although he's also a rabid right-wing boomer so we no longer speak to him.

A black and white photograph scan, almost in a postcard style with a thick white border, thicker along the bottom length and upon which is printed "Photographed on board RMS Queen Mary". The picture is a dining room aboard the ship, side onto a table against the hull wall where a porthole window is set high up with tied-back curtains either side. The table is set for four people with plates of food and side plates with bread rolls on them, a small vase of flowers, and a board with the number 35 on it. On the left side of the table as we look there is a young boy in short-sleeved shirt with a young woman nearer us; she's wearing a sleeveless dress and her hair is piled high on her head. On the right is an older couple. The man wears a dark suit and tie over a white shirt. The woman has a white cardigan over a patterned dress. Everyone is turning towards the camera with a smile for the souvenir photo shot.

The eventual solution was to rename the original Queen Mary, Queen Mary II so that the new liner could use the name Queen Mary. It was only when the liner was eventually retired from active service in 1976 that this plucky little Clyde steamer could regain its original name.

The TS Queen Mary moored next to the Glasgow Tower.

This is a Clyde steamer which was built at the William Denny Shipyard in Dumbarton. Despite being launched first, in 1936, it had to change its name to the Queen Mary II in order to avoid confusion with Cunard's newly launched trans-Atlantic liner, the RMS Queen Mary.
