Today in Labor History September 5, 1936: Photographer Robert Capa captured the death of 24-year-old anarchist Federico "Taino" Borrell in the iconic photo The Falling Soldier. Borell was an antifascist fighter, killed during the Spanish Civil War. Capa is considered by many to be the greatest war photojournalist ever. He was the only civilian photographer who landed on Omaha Beach during D-Day. He co-founded Magnum Photos collective, which included David "Chim" Seymour, Maria Eisner, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, William Vandivert, and Rita Vandivert. He died after stepping on a landmine in Vietnam in 1954

Today in Labor History July 26, 1937: Photojournalist and antifascist Gerda Taro was killed while covering the Spanish Civil War. She was 26. Thousands attended her funeral. Tara was a German Jew, who had to flee Germany after being imprisoned for her anti-Nazi activism. While living in exile, in France, she met another Jewish exile and photojournalist, Endre Ernő Friedmann. Together they published their work under the pseudonym Robert Capa. Scholar Hanno Hardt described their work as such: "Taro and Capa helped invent the genre of modern war photography while fueling the vicarious experience of the spectator by offering an approximation of life in the conflict zone."[

After Taro’s death, Friedmann would retain the name Robert Capa and go on to become recognized as one of the greatest photojournalists ever. In 1947, he cofounded the great Magnum photojournalism cooperative, which included other great photographers, like Maria Eisner, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and William and Rita Vandivert.

Madrid and Paris both named streets for Taro, Calle Gerda Taro and Rue Gerda Taro, respectively.
Helena Janeczek portrayed Taro in her historical novel, The Girl With the Leica (1917).

Gestern habe ich die Folge über #RobertCapa im Podcast von @fotomenschen gehört. Sehr spannend. Vor Jahren war ich in der Capa-Ausstellung im Gropiusbau in Berlin gewesen. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, dass die Ungereimtheiten bzgl. der D-Day Fotos da angesprochen wurden.
Schade, dass es derzeit keine neuen Folgen gibt. Aber es wird auch noch eine Weile dauern, bis ich das Archiv gehört habe.

Today in Labor History March 19, 1933: Nazis arrested Jewish antifascist photographer Gerda Taro and interrogated her about a supposed communist plot to overthrow Hitler. She had previously been arrested for distributing anti-fascist literature. The Nazis eventually let her go and she fled to France, and then Yugoslavia. She died at the age of 26, photo-documenting the Spanish Republican war against Franco and the fascists. Some said that she was responsible, along with Robert Capa, of inventing the genre of war photography. Capa was actually the nom de guerre of Taro’s lover, Endre Friedmann, a Hungarian Jew who taught her the art of photography and who later went on to found Magnum Photos, along with French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. “Capa” was Friedmann’s street name, back in Hungary. It meant “shark.”

El Festival 'Robert Capa' reaviva el abandonado edificio de Peironcely 10 de Entrevías, gracias a la artista Raquel de la Coba, que ha finalizado el mural "DE PUERTAS AFUERA". Sus nuevas obras, embellecen los muros de la calle Miguel de la Roca y la esquina de Peironcely.

Con esta nueva actuación artística, inspirada en la obra de Capa y Taro, se ha completado el tríptico que decoraba la fachada principal de la casa, convirtiéndola en un emblema de la memoria democrática de Madrid.

Peironcely 10 es el inmueble que el mítico fotoperiodista húngaro Robert Capa fotografió en 1936, tras un bombardeo alemán, convirtiendo dicha instantánea en un icono universal del horror de la guerra.
