Dunnottar Castle is bathed in a soft, silvery glow under the moonlight. The ancient stone structure stands majestically on a rugged cliff, surrounded by a tranquil sea. In the distance, the lights of Aberdeen are visible on the horizon. The landscape is serene, with the moon casting gentle shadows and highlighting the castle's historic features against the night sky.

The Glasgow Style mixes elements of such traditional Scottish architecture with European Art Nouveau influences to give a distictive and uniquely Glaswegian style. In particular, there are a lot of similarities between such buildings and Mackintosh's masterpiece that is Hill House in Helensburgh.

Bedlay Castle on the outskirts of Glasgow near Moodiesburn. Primarily built in the 16th and 17th Centuries, it's an example of Tower House, probably the most common type of Scottish Castle. This type of building clearly influenced Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his contemporaries at the Glasgow School of Art when, in the 1890s, they were developing the Glasgow Style.

Dunglass Castle on the shore of the Clyde Estuary near Bowling to the west of Glasgow. Originally built in 1380 for the Barony of Colhouquon. By the 1700s it lay in ruins. In 1899, the house in the background was bought by the parents of the Glasgow Style artists Margaret and Frances MacDonald. The interior was later re-modelled by Margaret's husband, Charles Rennie MacKintosh.

Crookston Castle in Glasgow. Built around 1400, it's the only surviving medieval castle in the city, and is its the second oldest building, after Glasgow Cathedral. Extensively damaged in a seige in the 1540s, it was later repaired. However, now only the northeast of the original four corner towers remains standing.

The ruins of Mugdock Castle in Mugdock Country Park just outside Glasgow.

Built in the 14th Century, this was a curtain wall castle. This meant it consisted of a series of towers connected by high, crenellated walls.

This style of castle replaced the older motte-and-bailey design in Scotland in the 13th Century. The tower at its south-west corner is all that remains of the original castle.
