me giving my first reading in the Japanese language last week.
I read the first third of my latest short story, Photo Bomber (「フォトボマー」), which appears in the anthology Fear and SF (恐怖とSF), published last month by Hayakawa. The event, held at @sumika_tankyu in Kamakura this past Wednesday afternoon, was a spontaneous addition to the Kamakura Poetry Festival. I opened for poet Robert Priest and singer-songwriter Kai Shimizu.

Take a close look at the cover of that upcoming sci-fi anthology from Hayakawa. You'll see my name in katakana (イーライ・K・P・ウィリアム). That's because I've got a short story in there, the first I've ever written in Japanese. It's something I've dreamed of for, like, 15 years. I'm in total disbelief...

German as the language of mathematics.
It allows for long composite words, which still have some concrete, tangible meaning. Its sentences can be complex yet they remain intuitive. And the mature writer can throw in concrete everyday notions, slang, to give added meaning to an abstract concept.
van der Waerden is a master of all of these.
(I live, work and write in English, and I love English and its writers with all my heart. Interestingly, my favourite English novelist is Joseph Conrad, whose native language was Polish.

finished draft three this morning. It was gruelling work but I've got it down to length, and the writing is much tighter now. I'll use the final week until the deadline to get feedback from colleagues and fine tune.

Tfw you try to learn a new language and are heavily confused by some things because you figure grammar out as you go and see words changing in an illogic way...
...and then realize your own language does this as well.

German language advice:
Many long scary words are just several small words in a trench coat. It's like lego, you just have to know how to stack them.
Also, many words are rather, well, descriptive:
Handschuh -> hand shoe -> Glove
It's kind of like a shoe, but for your hand.
Fußgängerüberweg -> foot walker over path (sort of) -> pedestrian crossing
The path where people walking on foot can cross the street.
And that second one is often marked with a Zebrastreifen, a zebra stripe, because it's a bunch of white stripes placed on usually rather dark coloured streets, creating a pattern resembling a zebra.
