Tfw you try to learn a new language and are heavily confused by some things because you figure grammar out as you go and see words changing in an illogic way...

...and then realize your own language does this as well.

German language advice:

Many long scary words are just several small words in a trench coat. It's like lego, you just have to know how to stack them.

Also, many words are rather, well, descriptive:

Handschuh -> hand shoe -> Glove
It's kind of like a shoe, but for your hand.

Fußgängerüberweg -> foot walker over path (sort of) -> pedestrian crossing
The path where people walking on foot can cross the street.

And that second one is often marked with a Zebrastreifen, a zebra stripe, because it's a bunch of white stripes placed on usually rather dark coloured streets, creating a pattern resembling a zebra.

But this is a good example of how meaning is a moving target. A consensus, not an objective fact.

This becomes very obvious when learning a second language. Especially when moving beyond vocab for everyday objects into more abstract concepts.

IMHO second language learning is as essential as maths or reading to a well rounded education - received or autodidactic. It's a weakness in the anglophone world that it's not always part of our curriculum.

I have actually had three smallish conversatoins entirely in Spanish this morning and I'm proud of my progress. (Even if I didn't understand every word the housekeeper was saying and only said "Despues de checkout, por favor".) #babysteps #secondlanguage

I don't ever remember not knowing English. The idea that I didn't know English at one point is weird to me but there was a time in my life where the only language I knew was Spanish. It just feels different to me, like knowing only Spanish is me being a different person entirely and me being fluent in English is just me being me. #SecondLanguage, #Childhood, #Spanish, #English.

I found a digital children’s book written in Korean and English with audio recordings of both. It’s by the Kid’s Book Project. Apparently the Korean introduction translation indicates it was written in several other API languages (I was trying to learn the word “English,” but apparently the Korean translation makes no mention of it (as the English translation does)).

Hold on. Apparently “영어” translates to both “English” and “prison” which has me wondering about the etymology. I am fascinated. Translating out of context doesn’t work so great. 🙃

I’m still super slow at reading Korean, but I am pleased when I can sound out words on signs and packaging.

How long did it take for me to gain English reading proficiency? I’m still consciously sounding out words. I don’t think I can effectively remember vocabulary without improved reading skills (in my self-taught fashion).

I been learning Spanish I know bit more compared what used to know. Couple dozen phrases and loads more words. Better at reading it. Duolingo is rather good but I feel need another tool on top to truly learn a second language. I'm tempted to get a phrase book or something to help me further. Made me realise learning a second language as an adult is rather difficult and why don't we make it easier? #SecondLanguage #learning hopefully right the hashtags
