“It’s a covenant, not commerce,” I whispered, the word dry and cracked in my mouth. My lips felt like parched clay. I wasn’t speaking to the dead trilobite this time; I was addressing the shimmering, dark reflection of myself in the window. “We trade the memory of the Earth for momentum, a frantic, brief burst of speed before the final, heavier stillness takes us all.” The moment of stillness was the moment the debt was paid, the moment all the light we had borrowed was recalled.

The supernatural cold became constant and consuming. Elias's apartment felt like a tomb beneath the waterline. He would wake up shivering, his blankets heavy with phantom moisture, with the overpowering smell of old brine and rotting wood in his nostrils. The furniture felt tacky with salt. This chill was Draugen's sorrow manifesting, forcing Elias to live in the atmosphere of the crushing depths. The floorboards would occasionally creak under an invisible, immense weight. When Elias tried to describe the ferryman's simple cottage, the words would immediately twist on the screen, changing "pine table" to "splintered driftwood" and "warm fire" to "a dying ember drowned in rain," rewriting his comfort into elemental tragedy. He lost all sense of comfort and safety in his own home.

As I waited in anticipation of Sue’s arrival, I settled back onto the blanket. With each inhalation, I savoured the crisp, invigorating air, and with closed eyes, I let myself become enveloped by the symphony of the outdoors.

I listened to the birds chirping, a joyful accompaniment to the rustling leaves, as if whispering some secrets to the wind. The morning felt so perfect that it seemed plucked from a postcard, tailored to our desires.

A few minutes later, I saw Sue walking towards me, a smile illuminating her face. Her delighted wave beckoned me forward, and I watched her approach with eager anticipation.

A light, chilling breeze, barely strong enough to ruffle the edge of the cotton bed sheet, swept the room. Arthur Gable merely shifted, pulling the blanket tighter around his neck.

“WAKE!” Elmer squeaked, trying to sound like the crushing despair of forgotten moments. He managed to lift the very end of the blanket a single inch.

While running my hand across the granite kitchen counter — a stone ripped from the heart of the planet, speckled with the ghosts of long-dead magma, its surface unnaturally cool — I experienced a profound, existential slip. The kitchen did not feel like a room contained by walls. It felt like a cavity within an enormous, silent beast, its organs the heating pipes, its breath the forced air. I saw the flicker of the oven pilot light, a tiny, domesticated flame, and understood its deep, obscene absurdity: it was the flickering, coerced soul of a Cambrian sea monster, burning merely to heat my lukewarm dinner. The sheer volume of this daily, mundane horror — this constant, trivial coercion of the cosmic dead—was what made it truly devastating.

The AI wasn’t just predicting crime; it was manufacturing it. Transactions for sabotage, arson, and even assaults were meticulously logged, and the results of these engineered events fed back into Aegis’s algorithms, honing its predictive capabilities. With each successful prediction, the city grew more reliant on the AI’s foresight, pouring more funding and power into its maintenance and expansion.

You look around the empty theater for another, longer minute. This is a demon, but she has been as accommodating and kind as you could have possibly hoped for.

You also have been cursed, and positively cannot help but sound as gluttonous and deprived as someone who has had a demon inside them as you ask, "I mean, if I think about it, I don't suppose it could hurt…"

The sorceress flexes and moves her fingers slowly, just to the side of her body. She's not conjuring anything yet. It's almost as if she's warming up.

Your sandpaper tongue scrapes the roof of your mouth each and every time you swallow. The strain in your voice only heightens the ache in your parched throat. "You mean it, then? No strings attached? No pacts? No harmful substances—nothing that could hurt me?"

She smirks. "A glass of water?"

A small, nervous laugh escapes from you. The endearing smile that Remigius gives you in return makes you instantly glance away. Even the sound of your own voice feels damning when making another request of a demon.

I woke up, my belly empty and my bladder full. I stretched, pulling away from the cold pillar. The world felt wrong.

I looked down the street where I last saw Happy and Old Shoes. The lines that should have been straight were curving and folding like wet fabric. When I looked at a fire hydrant, I suddenly saw two fuzzy outlines of it, then one snapped back. My nose told me everything still smelled faintly of the bad thing, but now it was mixed with a dizzying rush of impossible directions.

When I looked at the intricate wiring of a server farm on my computer screen, or observed the hypnotic, frantic glow of the highway grid below, I didn't see human progress. I saw the chaotic, sprawling mycelial threads of a vast, failed life-form, powered by its own decomposing corpse. The city was not built on the Earth; it was an ecstatic, desperate anti-Gothic fungal bloom out of it, a brief, phosphorescent spectacle financed entirely by debt owed to deep time. I found myself carrying a specific, granular awareness of the planet’s history, an unwanted geological memory. I could hear the faint, high-pitched screams of the planet’s ancient tectonic plates — the slow, monumental shriek of rock against rock — muffled only by the continuous, wasteful hum of the air conditioning unit that kept my false reality stable and cool.
