Finding Strength in the Smiles of Others: Embracing Hope and Resilience in Difficult Times

Introduction After reflecting on Eiichiro Oda’s quote about loneliness being more painful than physical hurt, there’s another piece of wisdom from the One Piece author that offers a counterpoint—a glimmer of hope for those of us caught in the depths of grief and loneliness. Oda once said, “Don’t forget to smile in any situation. As long as you are alive, there will be better things later, and there will be many.” These words resonate deeply, but they also present a […]

If, @qkslvrwolf, after Biden ended his candidacy, Biden also would have quit as president, then Pres. Kamala Harris would have become our first female president, and she could have won more votes by showing voters what she could accomplish as president before Election Day. Biden was too selfish to give Kamala Harris that chance.

A quotation from Eric Hoffer

The taint hidden in selflessness is that selflessness is the only moral justification of ruthlessness.

Review of "Lord of Light" (4 stars): Intrigue at the Edge of the Mortal

Quote of the day, 17 July: St. Charlotte of the Resurrection

Saint Charlotte: Unselfish service to others

She fulfilled with the same zeal and ardor all the different duties with which she was entrusted. In her role as infirmarian, her love for God and charity toward her neighbor shone forth most brilliantly.

She courageously bore every burden and never showed the slightest disgust or repugnance at the putrid odor that emanated from the body of a sister who was consumed by cancer from head to foot. The sick nun needed to be bandaged almost every hour of the day and night, apart from the care of the house surgeon, who admitted he could barely endure the hideous spectacle of a living body stripped of its flesh.

But the generous devotion of our dear Sister Charlotte of the Resurrection could not prevent her from injuring her back due to the awkward position she was forced to assume while bandaging her patient. It became apparent that her naturally well-formed figure had become completely stooped.

When the prioress observed this and expressed her desire that Sister Charlotte leave the post, the good sister asked, as a favor, that no attention be paid to her infirmity. Instead, she asked that the prioress should think only of the distress Sister Charlotte’s removal would cause the poor patient.

Sister Charlotte thought it would be a consolation for the sick sister to see her caregiver until her last moment, which everything indicated would be soon. And indeed it was: Heaven called her home two days later.

Sister Marie of the Incarnation, O.C.D.

Amour Fraternel, 65

Note: Saint Charlotte of the Resurrection (Anne Marie Madeleine Thouret) was born at Mouy in northern France on 16 September 1715. She entered the Carmelite monastery on 18 March 1736 and lived a life of extraordinary devotion to her sisters, especially in her role as infirmarian.

At 78 years and 10 months, Saint Charlotte was among the sixteen Carmelites of Compiègne arrested during the French Revolution. Too infirm to climb down from the cart at the Conciergerie on 13 July 1794, she was roughly handled by guards and fell face-first to the ground. Bloodied but unbroken in spirit, she told her captors:

Believe that I hold nothing against you, and that on the contrary I am very grateful to you for not having killed me, because if I had died by your hands, I would have been deprived of the happiness and glory of martyrdom that my companions and I dare to hope for from the infinite goodness of our divine redeemer, Jesus Christ.

She was guillotined with her sisters on 17 July 1794.

@rzeta0 which I duly did, having seen organisations that were one person’s “territory” fade and die when the linchpin ran out of new ideas or lost touch with the developing zeitgeist. PyCon was far too precious to become a fiefdom.

Which reminds me, I believe our thanks are due to Marc Andre Lemburg (unless he knows better) for transferring the PyCon.org domain to the PSF when he could have easily held it to ransom. #PyConEthos #sharing #community #selflessness

Marginalized folks have been doing this all along. Linking elbows and standing up for each other. Those of us with privilege need to level up our game. Now, more than ever.

While in a crisis, many of us strive to protect our interests, survive, or escape... Yet, there are those who not only refrain from seeking personal gain but also go beyond themselves to help resolve our crisis.

Look closely, you can see them...

In another way,

LOVE = GOD(x)

Is that better?

Where x could equal something different for everyone on the planet.

My hope is that there's enough people left on the planet that feel strong enough not to be exploited by those that believe otherwise.

That is, those who's God is not of Love, but of what many would presume, #Evil

#Self vs #Selflessness

Please don't tell me what I'm in denial of.

Thank you.

BDG feature: How to Generate Limitless Generosity: Giving Is Never Unaffordable

Read here: tinyurl.com/57ebp5y3

I had been home for several weeks when I received a telephone call; a lady from the Red Cross wished to speak to me. She told me there was still no opening for nurses in Germany, but there was a great demand for them in Austria. Were I willing to go there, I should be ready to report to Mährisch-Weisskirchen at the beginning of April. My mind was made up immediately.I left on the seventh of April, 1915, at six o’clock in the morning.

Saint Edith Stein
Life in a Jewish Family, Chapter VIII

Edith Stein had only one love: Knowledge. She had only one passion: Books to deepen her knowledge.

Her library had expanded so much in the course of years that, even after everything unsuitable to the Carmel had been eliminated, she entered the convent with six huge boxes of books as her “dowry.” But for now, any such thought of monastic life was still a long way off for her.

The world war broke out [World War I, July 28, 1914]. The lecture halls grew empty. Professors and students hurried to enlist.

While Erna, who had begun her medical residency in Breslau early in 1914, merely transferred to another clinic, Edith felt compelled by sheer patriotism to discontinue her studies and volunteer for the Red Cross.

After the required training she was sent to the contagious diseases ward of the military hospital in Mährisch-Weisskirchen. There, as everywhere, she threw herself into her work with her whole soul and her unique selflessness and was popular with the sick and wounded as she had been with her fellow students and teachers.
