Craft Industry Alliance: Sewing Patterns Rise from DGA Bankruptcy Ashes. âAfter much uncertainty, itâs confirmed: The âBig 4â sewing patterns have survived the Design Group Americas bankruptcy. The sewing pattern business, including the Simplicity, McCalls, Vogue, and Butterick brands, was sold as a going concern for $2.25 million to Rubelmann Capital in partnership with existing management. Parent Company of the Big 4 Sewing Pattern Brands Sold to a Liquidator by Abby Glassenberg | Jun 5, 2025
The legacy sewing pattern brands Simplicity, Butterick, McCalls, and Vogue, commonly referred to as the Big 4, have been sold to a liquidator.
IG Design Group cited the impact of tariffs imposed by the US as a factor. Over 50% of DGAâs products are manufactured in China, although the sewing patterns are made in the US. The company also mentioned a softening market over the last several years, as well as the bankruptcy of Joann, as factors in the sale.

Big Update!
I have just released the layout tool to my website. It allows you to create cutting layouts, so you can determine the amount of fabric you need for a specific sewing pattern. You can also download the cutting layout to use with your projector.

Now that I'm reading more about it, it sounds like one of the options is that the pattern companies could be sold on. It doesn't have to mean disolution, I was too shocked by the term liquidator to realise that. It's also very early days yet.
"Hamilton also pointed out a significant ancillary role that the Big 4 play in the indie sewing pattern ecosystem. âThey also own the last pattern tissue printers in the country, and that is significant to all the other pattern companies that rely upon it.â"
Whoa -- *two* people who run independent pattern companies mention this as a possible disaster for them, because the physical machinery had been centralized. That's complicated.
@vmbrasseur an aspect of the JoAnn saga I didn't expect.
Does this mean all of the big 4, or those in the US? Are they the same thing?
Wife is trying to learn how to make kids clothes but the patterns from Spotlight don't seem very good. Anybody got any suggestions for good sewing patterns that don't assume already know how to sew?
