It's an old story. The Black Death reduced the European population by a quarter which created a labour shortage, which put up wage levels and hey presto - the Industrial Revolution. How is it that one might partially defend the #Spectator & its politics on the basis that it contains well-written articles.

Don't get me wrong I like good writing, and indeed one of my complaints about so much academic literature is how badly written it is... before I retired it was painful reading some colleagues work.

But in the end the content, surely is more important than the form - unless we are talking about fiction, where it may be differently balanced.
