I only see the #springtails when I'm editing...
the centipede is was about 25mm long in total, and this is just a section.

Second image is a globular springtail photobombing.

Not the best photos, but I was very excited to find this Sminthurinus quadrimaculatus in the field!

Didn't find a lot of springtails in the Okanagan last spring, so this Bourletiella hortensis (garden springtail) was quite exciting! Photographing on white trays is still challenging for me.

#Springtail #Orchesella #cincta is up to 4 mm long, native to #Europe/Canada and is #herbivorous/ fungi-bacteriovorous, #living e.g.in dead plant tissue. Specimen below: on #deadwood with island-like #fungalgrowth, mites, e.g. #Linopodes, and i.a. #isopods.
G. Ernsting & J. A. Isaaks (2002) found the #dimorphic #gendersize with smaller males being due to growth inhibition by #spermatophore development.

Springtail Orchesella cincta (Collembola) is common in Europe and one of our largest species. It can have an alterations between feeding phases and reproduction phases depending on ecological conditions and have a male size dimorphism. My specimen was found on the underside of a large deadwood branch on a semi dry meadow in urban park Rehberge in Berlin. That wood contained a complexity of organisms, such as fungi, mites or isopods. I also the morphologically striking mite Linopodes there. See my sci commun. article on X https://x.com/wirthstef/status/1967617570854388140?t=BwrFmpoIG1vnbp4iDLLFLA&s=19

A tiny springtail, Morulina sp. (left), and a beetle mite, Oribatellidae sp. (right), crawling over white-footed slime, Diachea leucopodia. Springtails are hexapods - they have six legs - but are not considered to be insects due to their internal mouthparts.

Like all arthropods, springtails need to shed their exoskeletons to grow - and I recently got very lucky to find a giant springtail that had just moulted!

I don't know if anyone's ever photographed this before!

Old photo but now with a completely different ID, Ptenothrix renateae, thanks to some kind people on iNaturalist. I read through the 1985 description of this species and am guessing it's the dorsal pattern that gives it away. #springtail #collembola #inaturalist #macro inaturalist.org/observations/8

Found this globular springtail on some
Morels this week in Oakland. The chillest I’ve ever met, just went about its business eating the mushroom while I creeped on in with a camera for a very very long time.

Globular springtail with a very round rump and cow like face. Body is covered in black and purple splotches

A twofer! A springtail (probably a juvenile Ptenothrix), riding on the back of a weevil (Sthereus horridus). I often find springtails riding other animals.

Orchesella villosa is one of my favourite springtails! They're quite large (up to 4-5mm or so) and very fuzzy looking.

Ptenothrix beta is one of many globular springtails that I find around the Lower Mainland, though this species is less common than the many undescribed Ptenothrix species!

I never knew that a #springtail could have antennae like these! I just saw this little one over on tumbr and I'm amazed. This one is from the genus Temeritas, spotted in Japan.

It looks like a berry with two cat whiskers stuck in it. Amazing creature! #SpringtailSunday

globular springtail.

It's a tiny insect of the leaf litter. Dark burgundy and very round with a spherical matte body covered in fine, dull orange setae.

The head is pear-shaped with two tiny black eyes near the top.

The most remarkable feature are the long, long antennae. They are at least three times the length of the body of the tiny arthropod. They are curved and spread out wide. The base of the slender antennae are striped in deep brown and white the long ends are just white. Although very delicate, they are also textured with fine hairs if your look closely.Another view of the same springtail. This time with a green background. Only part of the creature is in focus because it's so tiny.
