#standardizedtesting

On a whim, I grabbed a copy of an AP Computer Science test-prep book from a local Little Library and ~treated~ tortured myself with a few of the example multiple-choice questions.

Most were... fine, if pretty unpleasant to read, but a couple were egregiously badly phrased, and one or two seemed to be outright wrong (i.e., had no correct solution).

Take this one, for example. If I'm reading it right, not only does it fail to define some of the variables it uses, but even a lenient reading of it seems to imply it will almost immediately hit an out-of-bound index on most input data.

Why do we put high schoolers through this crap, again?

A picture of a question from a practice AP Computer Science exam, with the following text:

27. Procedure doSomething takes in 2 parameters, a list and integer, and follows the following algorithm.

1. Let min be the value at the first index of the list and max be the value at the last index of the list.

2. If max < min, then stop: target is not present in array. Return -1.

3. Compute mid as the average of max and min, rounded down (so that it is an integer).

4. If array [guess] equals target, then stop. Return guess.

5. If the guess was too low, that is, array [guess] < target, then set min = guess + 1.

6. Otherwise, the guess was too high. Set max = guess 1.

7. Go back to step 2, repeat until procedure returns -1 or guess.

Which of the following are true statements about the procedure?

I. It implements a binary search.

II. It implements a sort of list from greatest to least.

III. It only works as intended when the list is sorted.

(A) I only

(B) II only

(C) I and III only

(D) II and III only

The Texas Senate passed a bill to eliminate the STAAR test — the state's standardized test for public schools — while also overhauling how schools are rated and limiting legal challenges that have delayed accountability scores in recent years.

[Excessive testing teaches students] that learning is a joyless succession of hoops through which they must jump, rather than a way of understanding and mastering the world. Every question has one right answer; the measure of a person is a number. Being insightful, or creative, or heaven forfend, counterintuitive counts for nothing.

While Houston ISD high school students saw improvements in standardized test scores during the first year under state-appointed leadership, in some cases outperforming other urban districts in Texas, their scores remained below statewide marks.

What world is this we live in where a 9 year old is anxious at night because he took *two seconds* too long on a reading comprehension test????

This week is standardized testing week here and man, I wish I could yeet them into the void.

One more week of mind-numbing #k12 #StandardizedTesting (proctoring) done.

About half my time during second semester (January through May) each year is spent inflicting standardized tests. Most of February and March is #OELPA (#Ohio #ESOL) testing. Then April is end-of-course graduation tests.

So, yes, next week will also be testing. If all goes well, I'll be done after testing on Wednesday. Realistically, Thursday will be make ups.

Won't someone think of the #students? And their #teachers?

It is that wonderful (not really) time of the #k12 school year when I spend basically 4 months doing standardized state testing.

As much as I would rather not have to proctor the tests, I feel very sorry for the students who have to waste valuable school time taking all these tests.

Been having a lot of conversations at my school lately about the trends in our standardized test data. I worry that when the numbers dip, we begin focusing on the wrong outcomes. I think our Science instruction is doing a great job teaching kids to love Science and to understand how it works. But the test measures whether they recall the specific details of dozens of lessons. It feels like Goodhart's Law at it's worst. #standardizedtesting #assessment

Avoid Raising Machines
"That we would train machines to be like us is not surprising.

The real scandal is how much we’ve trained ourselves to be like machines."
Austin Kleon

It's testing season as another school year comes to a close. The time when students get to demonstrate just how well we've trained them to be little machines.
