--<--
The protests that began in Iran last month have been suppressed with a level of state violence not seen since the 1980s, when the Islamic Republic executed thousands of leftists and other dissidents. In this episode, Adam Shatz talks to Chowra Makaremi and Amir Ahmadi Arian about the evolution of public dissent in Iran since 1979 and why the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement of 2022 opened the way to more overtly revolutionary protest.

They also discuss the economic collapse underpinning the most recent uprising and the ways in which the Iranian regime has refined the use of opacity and rumour to consolidate its power.

Chowra Makaremi is an anthropologist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris and Amir Ahmadi Arian is a novelist and assistant professor at Binghamton University, New York.

"What's behind the organization of protests in #Minneapolis? The city has seen the mobilization of local rapid response networks, mutual aid groups, and observers like Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot by federal immigration agents. Organizers are drawing on lessons from movements that emerged after the 2020 police killing of George Floyd..."

"Among the most fascinating and most studied stories of the #Trump era will someday be how and why so many of these apparently titanic centers of power—from Congress to the Ivy League to Big Law to the Fourth Estate—crumpled so easily, though we already have a sense of the basic mechanics of cowardice, of anticipatory obedience, which is so often couched in the bloodless language of pragmatism."

"#Iran’s political field remains crowded and contested. Trade unionists, Kurdish social movements, women organisers, students, journalists, lawyers, and civic networks persist not because repression has failed, but because political pluralism in Iran has deep historical roots."

"Chicago and Los Angeles, where resistance to #ICE has been extraordinary and well-organized, have histories of #policeViolence that rivals anything ICE agents are doing. Indeed, it is precisely the long experience of organizing against this violence that prepared activists in these cities to resist ICE." - Robin D. G. Kelley

Call for Solidarity with Miguel Peralta Betanzos Continues

The three months given to the Collegiate Court of Oaxaca to resolve the appeal in case 631/2022 of politically persecuted anarchist, Miguel Peralta Betanzos, has come and gone. As is custom, the state doesn’t fulfill its own rules, further wearing down and tiring out those who are facing legal cases, their family members, communities, and compas. It now seems that the hearing and resolution from the court will come sometime in the final weeks of January or in February 2026. Although nor should we trust the state’s word.

It is important to highlight that this is one of the last remaining legal resources available for Miguel Peralta to free himself of the political persecution of the Mexican State. There are multiple possible results with this resolution. One is that his original 50-year sentence is confirmed. Another is that he is absolved of all charges and granted his absolute freedom. There is much at stake…

We continue calling on individuals, collectives, and organizations to show their solidarity with Miguel Peralta. Art, graphics, letters, communiques, events, street actions, everything and anything can add to the ongoing solidarity.

Absolute Freedom for Miguel Peralta!
