Before the storm, the sun setting over the #Tejo estuary, a lonely cargo ship anchored in the horizon #silentsunday #coastline #sunsetovertheocean #winter2005 #photography

A cena é pacífica e tranquila.

Impressionist seascape oil painting of the ocean at dusk. The clouds are soft and fluffy and there is a soft apricot tint to the sky. The ocean is calm and there is a gentle breeze at the end of a summer's day. A relaxing and meditative beach painting for coastal decor!

Taking in the sunset tonight with a friend who had a rough weekend. We've got to take care of each other; it's the only way we get through.

Fully a half hour before sunset, the orange glow appeared on the horizon and persisted for the next hour or so.Cloud dragons doing an exceptional job of Hiding the Shiny Thing.Old Sol doing one of its Eye of Sauron impressions, with some assistance from the local cloud dragons. The view is just breathtaking.

It was a glorious warm evening down at the usual walking spot. Dogs frolicking, people smiling, no sign of imminent rain, just enough breeze to keep the air fresh. And I was lucky enough to get some photos I am really, really pleased with.

A grand opening, with many swirly puffy clouds in a bright blue sky, with darker blue water down below.Old Sol doing its shiny-fiery thing. What looks like a cloud quilt up above, and a few people on the beach below. The floor-and-celing effect here makes me think of those swooping shots of high-speed maneuvering where the top and bottom of the frame are intentionally blocked off. This one also looks like something out of a matte painting for a science fiction landscape. Pale orange afterglow and rocks in the ocean in the foreground.

I didn't leave the house intending to take a long walk; I just didn't feel like driving. But I wanted to see the sunset. There's a lovely little park with a view of the ocean about a thirty-minute walk from my front doorstep; I've taken photos there before. Sometimes the only way to know where you're going is to get one foot out the door.

Blue skies over the neighbourhood; no sign of the clouds that were raining on us this morning. Planes leave vapour trails going to and from our nearby international airport. (I once looked down after takeoff and literally said to myself, "Oh wow, I can see my house from here.")Cloud dragons leaving a small opening for Old Sol to shine through on its way over the horizon. Will they close it up before twilight? Stay tuned ...This is the shot I'm proudest of: Grey clouds around an umber sunset, Old Sol not visible directly, but clearly present behind the swarming cloud dragons, with the ocean's blue beneath. This may be the best photo I've taken so far this year. The four elements again: Fire, Air, Water, Earth. And it's going to be dark soon; time to head home. Thanks for coming along.

Back to the beach today; it was pleasant out, with just enough breeze to keep me cool while walking. The usual numbers of dogs and humans were out, and most of them were friendly. All in all, it was good to be moving.

Old Sol the Shiny Thing asserts its presence with its usual fiery orange glow. Ha ha, it seems to say, you can't hide me!Quick! Hide the shiny thing! Cloud dragons scramble in from the north in a rapid formation and take a position near the horizon. The shiny thing gets one more appearance in just before dipping below the horizon. All in all, a well-contested draw, I'd say. All of it was very pretty to behold.Afterglow with rocks. Which is different from afterglow on the rocks, which sounds like either a cocktail or a pastime for amorous marine mammals.

Lots of people out at the municipal beach tonight. Lots of dogs, too, which is always nice. Most everyone was smiling, and a few wished each other seasonal greetings. The game of hide-the-shiny-thing was well-contested; both sides did well. Happy Christmas to those of you who celebrate it; a pleasant Monday free of stress to those of you who don't. “Love binds us all.”

Old Sol bring surrounded by cloud dragons, but not giving in. Hiding the light, it seems, is always temporary. Some of my favourite rocks playing host to another spectaular orange sunset, and the after-effects thereof. Pretty blue waves underlie the scene.Pink cloud-painting in the afterglow of sunset, with pale blue skies peeking out.More shots of my favourite rocks, with peach-coloured afterglow behind them.

Cloud dragons have mostly gone to Santa Cruz or Monterey to celebrate the Solstice, I suspect; skies were clear and the big ball of plasma was all striking and dramatic. But it was cool enough for walking; the windbreaker probably wasn't necessary, but it was nice to have it.

Old Sol looking very shiny indeed. Orange glow of sunset contrasting with tranquil dark blue ocean below. The waves were not particularly crashy tonight; just their usual soothing rumble. No unruly splashing over the seawall; one might actually imagine the ocean to be contained. One would be wrong, of course.More vivid colours in the water here; many hues of blue and orange. And some more of my favourite rocks.

Out to one of the old famliar favourites today; friendly dogs, waving people, a good walking trail right by the beach. Not enough clouds to give Old Sol any trouble shining all the way down over the horizon; the cloud-painting was magnificent, as usual.

The opening shot: One of my favourite views from the hiking trail. Pale blue skies over the beach with scattered puffy white clouds. A large tree is off to the left.Old Sol making a statement: a big orange ball of plasma framed between two of my favourite rocks coming up out of the ocean. There are a few clouds, but not nearly enough to obscure the orange fireball. This is a clear victory condition for Old Sol in the eternal daily game of hide-the-shiny-thing. No clouds even attempting to hide the glow of the sunset. Fiery orange over dark blue ocean waters below.Cloud-painting done in fine Californai Winter style; the orange illuminates everything from grey to blue to just a bit of white, in a shape reminischent of a horizontal rainbow. My favourite rocks are in the background.

Got to the beach a little early, walked a little extra. Some overcast but room for a spectacular sunset between the high clouds and the mostly-clear horizon. Had a bit of photo fatigue by the time I was done; I took many more shots than usual tonight.

Here's the setup: Lots of clouds up high, no sign of the big orange ball. One might say that the cloud dragons have the court covered, at this point. But Old Sol certainly does make an entrance. Cue the horn section for the dramatic scene.Yup, that's definitely a big ol' orange shiny thing, painting the clouds every which way.And now it's all over but the afterglow. However, I am tired and I am going home.
2023-12-17

Definitely a big-ball-of-plasma sort of sunset tonight; went down to one of my favourite sunset-watching spots, even though there's really no beach.

We start out with a real Eye of Sauron look: "Look at me, I'm a big ball of energy that can blind you from 140 million kilometres away!" Drama Llama, I tell you,Some of the cloud dragons have had enough of this nonsense, and start to play hide-the-shiny thing.Wispy cloud dragons playing and cavorting in the breeze and afterglow.
2023-12-16

Back to an old favourite spot I haven't visited in a couple of months. Old Sol was glorious, as usual. Fewer dogs here but more smiling people.

Less Eye of Sauron than yesterday, but orange enough to promise some nice afterglow. Some of my favourite rocks, with the fading afterglow in the background.More afterglow, gently diffused as the rocks sit there being rock-like.
2023-12-15

Lots of dogs, good weather, lovely sunset. I walked a little extra to make up for yesterday -- I was good and tired by the time I got home.

Old Sol doing a great impression of a fiery ball of plasma, and some cloud dragons playing their usual game of hide-the-shiny-thing.More dramatic contrasts; Old Sol can be a bit dramatic. Lovely dark blue waves below.Afterglow and some of my favourite rocks.

It's been a long, difficult summer. But the beach is still there, and still lovely.

Old Sol preparing to do its disappearing act, with lovely orange glow over the deep blue of the ocean waves. The orange of the after-sunset glow was especially vivid tonight.A large boat on the horizon, with pale orange glow behind it and a few darkened wispy clouds above.
2023-03-23

Brisk this evening; the wind is back but the rain is not (yet.) But the sunset was lovely, and I needed it very much.

The view from one of my favourite parks: bright orange-yellow cloud-painting over the dark blue sea.Wide-angle view with many vivid colours on display: pale blue sky and light grey fluffy clouds, Old Sol blazing yellow-orange, and the startling winter green of the climbing foliage.Dusk over the ocean, with a blaze of setting sunlight and foam on the waves.
2023-03-17

Beautiful evening at the beach. Nice long walk with friendly people and dogs, and very mild weather; no jacket required.

Old Sol doing the disappearing act.The water was lovely and blue tonight.A tree came down across the trail in the last batch of storms.

Windier today than it has been all week. And the cloud dragons are back to play.

Clouds make for colourful contrasts: white and blue and grey and orange toward the horizon. The beach and trails are green and brown and the water is a vivid light blue.Brilliant orange paint-work on the clouds as Old Sol dips toward the horizon. Streaks of vivid sky blue peek through the clouds,

Today was not especially productive, but the evening walk was good.

No clouds to paint tonight. But the water makes a lovely soothing sound.Lovely orange afterglow with gentle waves.
2023-02-08

Worked for it tonight, but the exertion felt good. Sunset over the beach was lovely; I was more focused on keeping myself moving, though.

Half an hour or so before sunset; Old Sol just hanging out over the pier. Not too many clouds around for sky-painting, but the ball-of-plasma was on full display tonight.Pretty as a postcard; one of the great reasons for beach walking this time of year.
