Got woken by a nervous crew mate at 4am when the wind had picked up across the beam and the boat had a distinct lean… but deep hulled and heavy displacement so nothing to worry about. Tore down past #Alderney, #Guernsey & #Sark at 8+ knots to arrive in Gorey to a welcome with coffee and breakfast rolls. No politics or real world head-mess in sight for a brief period. #sailing

Today, Mum and I took a boat trip to Sark, where cars are not allowed (but the density of tractors is curiously high...). We took a horse and carriage ride around the island, which had beautiful views, before having scampi for lunch.
We shared a table with two complete strangers so that we could all sit down sooner. Then we got an ice cream made from local milk and got a tractor ride back to the boat.
A wonderful day, and relatively virtuous on the food-front too :)

Did you know that there's a place in #Europe that still has a #feudal system?
The #crown dependency of #Sark is a curious place. It has no paved #roads & #cars are forbidden, #women only got the right to inherit #property in 1999, & the whole island is, to this day, a fiefdom.
This means the #monarch is the head, with a #lord (seigneur here) as the executive power & the tenants (effectively liegemen) as the vassals.
Sark has to pay the #king a yearly #knight's fee.

The International Dark-Sky Association named the English Channel island of Sark its first "dark-sky" island. The island only has about 600 residents, no cities, no public street lighting, and no cars allowed - which helps keep light pollution to almost zero.
