🌡️ July 21, 2024, was the hottest day ever recorded globally: +17.09°C, surpassing the previous record of +17.08°C from July 2023.

This peak is linked to a rare sudden stratospheric warming over Antarctica. #Climate #Environment #TemperatureRecord #SSW #Antarctica

😱☀️ 🌡️ 'We're screaming into the void.' Across the U.S., heat keeps breaking records

July 11, 20245:00 AM ET

By Julia Simon

"When Joe Pascale moved to the desert city of Palm Springs, Calif., about 17 years ago it was hot, but in the mornings and evenings there was a break from the heat.

“'You could get up in the morning and it would be relatively cool and you could enjoy outside, even in the dead of summer,' he says. 'The mornings would be just brilliant.'

"'That doesn't exist for us anymore, and it's a huge loss,' he says.

"#PalmSprings has broken temperature records one after another in the last week. The city hit 122 degrees on July 8, the hottest temperature ever recorded for that day, according to the National Weather Service [#NWS].

"Last Friday, the city broke its all-time high #TemperatureRecord when it hit 124 degrees. Even in the early mornings this week, the temperature has still been in the low 90s or high 80s.

"Pascale recognizes the connection between his increasingly hot city and #ClimateChange, caused largely by humans burning #FossilFuels.

"'Sometimes we feel like we're screaming into the void,' Pascale says. 'There's a problem that we need to be addressing.'

"Last year was the hottest year on record for the world. The U.S. is warming up at a faster rate than the global average, which means the effects of #GlobalWarming will be more pronounced.

"#Arizona, #California, #Oregon and #Nevada have all seen record-breaking heat in recent weeks. And while the heat wave is mostly in the West, states across the country like #NorthCarolina and #Maryland have also seen temperature records fall this summer.

"'It’s not subtle,' says Joellen Russell, an oceanographer and climate scientist at The University of Arizona, who notes her city, #TucsonArizona, also saw a high temperature record fall this week.

"'We're going to continue [breaking temperature records] as long as we keep increasing the amount of #GreenhouseGases in our atmosphere,' Russell says."

If I understand correctly, previous high temperature in New Orleans was 102 F (38.8 C), which we reached 4 times in the last 130 years, two of which were in the past week.
Today it got up to 105 F (40.5 C)

”According to scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, July 2023 was hotter than any other month in the global temperature record.”

In 56 of the 197 days of 2023, global #temperaturerecord for at least the last 125,000 years was broken for that day. All of the last 25 days broke #highesttemperature record for that day, and we're not even seeing the #ElNino effect in full yet. #climatecrisis #heatwave

Global average temperature for each and every one of the last 13 days has been higher than any previous recorded global average temperature (1979 on). This is a remarkable departure from normal variation and made all the more startling by the number of days and the amount above the prior maximum, not to mention that it is a global average and not just the temperature in a specific place.

The last twelve days have been the #hottest twelve days in human history. Even on July 14, a higher global average #temperature was recorded than the previous record. #climatecrisis #temperaturerecord #heatwave
