Next lowest low tide is on New Year's and that too post sunset! #TidePooling

screengrab of tide chart for 1st January, where the lowest tide of 0.38m is at 6:35 pm and sunset at 6:12pm.

We went tide pooling the other day and I got some neat photos (see captions)

There were many big-ass purple sea stars (and some orange ones too)It's amazing to me how many beautiful sea creatures, when taken out of water, end up just looking like weird piles of snot 😂This lil green anemone is the only one I found that was actually in enough water to be open and anemone-looking. Love the color on this smol boi 🤩ENVIRONMENTAL STORYTELLING 😭

Pacific Grove #tidepooling opportunity that I had to pass up due to time constraints.

Light gray skies easing into off-shore fog easing into light blue waves crashing on a rocky shore. The tide is clearly out with dark rocks wet and covered with slowly drying seaweeds.

I sure do love me a nudibranch. Yesterday's negative low tide was great for finding them out at Pillar Point Reef on Half Moon Bay. Here, a darling spotted dorid. #tidepooling

It may surprise you to learn that ascidians or sea squirts (Tunicata) such as these are chordate animals, like humans.

In their early life stages they have larva with tails, the beginnings of a backbone, and gills - which are then reabsorbed/lost when they anchor their heads to a surface!

I was so excited to see this Clown Dorid #nudibranch during my latest #tidepooling adventures.

A sea slug (nudibranch) stretched out in a "fast" moving line across a rocky surface. The nudibranch has a white, somewhat transparent body. The body is speckled with orange bumps (cerrata) that contain stinging cells. From left to right: it has an orange tipped tail, a frilly white gill with orange tips in the middle, two white with orange tipped antennae like structures (rhinosphores), and a splayed out orange "beard" of mouth tentacles.A close up of the nudibranch's "face". Its antannae-like rhinosphores are a brilliant red-orange. They are made up of a central vertical stalk with many thin frills in a horizontal stack. At the base of the left rhinospore, there is a frilly white ring around the stalk, that protects the rhinosphore when it is retracted. A nudibranch retracts its rhinosphore when it is out of the water, or when it feels threatened.

The "beard" of mouth tentacles are in a single line across its face. A beard tentacle is backlit by the sun against the nudibranch's shadow. The beard tentacle has a branching structure, similar to a strand of moss. Two tiny white tentacles sit in the middle of its face.

Four orange spots are in the middle of its "forehead".Detailed picture of the nudibranch's gills. They are branching, feathery structures. They are white with red-orange tips.

A tide pool snail poking its head out of its shell, with little orange flaps. It is surrounds by many different seaweeds including neon green paper thin sheets, shimmery thin red sheets, and turfy pink and brown algae that is blurry, indistinguishable.

Two Anthopleura elegantissima anemones with a sneaky crab hidden between them.

Two green sea anemones in a tide pool. One is closed so you can see just the pink tips of its feeding tentacles surrounding by its bumpy green body. The other is open, many long green tentacles waiting for prey. In the open ones center there is an oval shaped hole leading to its digestive cavity. Hiding between the anemones is a crab almost invisible against the matching rock. It is pressed flat, legs out, and eyes looking up at the camera.

Extreme low tide brought me excellent beachy things: urchin test, gumboot chiton, abalone shell, nudibranchs. #tidepooling #ocean #kingtides #invertebrates
