It is official… I am on vacation.

Six business days without having to go to work and do business. Ecstasy at its finest.

In less then 48 hours I will be in Florida where it is not 24 degrees out. It is just too amazing to be real. Warmth in January. Pretty please.

Holidays! I'm on holidays!! Finally.

I took Dad shopping this morning and then dropped him home, where we had a cuppa and we discussed auto immune conditions and why my dichondra repens isn't doing so well in one part of my ex-lawn (probably a bit too much sun).

Now I have basically zero plans for the rest of the day and I am so excited about it. Might do some washing and then go onto the library website and see if they have a book I just heard reviewed on the radio this morning. Why yes, I do know how to party, thank you for noticing

When we came home from vacation in… June? May? Early June, I think, we immediately planned another trip for the early fall. We were going to go to San Diego for a few days and then go to Los Angeles for a day or so and then come home. Just a massively huge, yet very short trip. We both booked time off from work and then right afterwards cancelled the whole thing in favor of another Florida trip in January.

We kept the vacation time on the books though. We thought maybe we’d go on a short trip somewhere closer to home. New York or the mountains in New Hampshire or something. Then as we got closer and closer to the start of the vacation time we started thinking about cancelling the time off and just waiting for the next big trip after the new year.

Then my father went into the hospital. Then my father passed away. Then we had the wake and the funeral. Now we’re down to one more work day before the start of the time off and there is no more talk of cancelling, despite having taken time off for my father. No. We’re going to have a staycation. We’re going to spend a week flaking on the living room couch watching Star Wars movies (Jen’s idea, not mine, I swear) and just ignoring civilization for a week.

I speak for myself when I say this, but I know Jen feels the same. I am not taking this time off from work because I want it. I am taking it because I need it. Physically and mentally. I need to shut down for a bit. I need to recharge my battery. I need to recover from the last month or so.

I have one work day left. Tomorrow is Friday. After that? One week’s worth of staycation. I am so ready for it. Give it to me, now.

Back to work after my 2 1/2 days of PTO.

I read some novellas by Steven King and Brian Lumley. Wrote a handful, maybe half a dozen short stories, wrote about my existential dread in my journal, played Star Trek Online on my laptop (you'll never guess who controls the Mirror Universe Borg Collective), and played Warhammer 40k Inquisitor Martyr, Trinity Fusion (only two achievements left), The Elder Scrolls Online, and Hades II on my SteamDeck.
I also changed from the name brand of my ADHD meds to generic and WOW it hits different. It's probably why I wrote so many short stories TBH instead of just staring at the clouds.
It was not enough time. Especially after the shooting. But I am in a much better headspace that I was a week ago. No more riding the edge to a nervous breakdown for at least a month, probably.

I even had a hypnagogic hallucination, only my second one since getting diagnosed with sleep apnea and getting on a breathing machine more than year and a half ago.

Anyway, take a few days off if you can. Take one day off if you can. Do nothing important. Relax. Reflect.
If you can't take a day off, please do what you can. Talk to your friends, hug your pets or plushies, eat a cookie, take a deep breath.
We live in unprecedented times and it's overwhelming.
