Eine Terekay-Schienenschildkröte (Podocnemis unifilis) steht mit hochgerecktem Hals auf einem Felsen am Ufer eines Flusses.
Die Tiere erreichen eine Länge von bis zu 45 cm und ein Gewicht von bis zu 8 Kilogramm. Die Männchen sind kleiner und leichter als die Weibchen. Der Rückenschild ist olivgrün bis bräunlich gefärbt. Die gelben Flecken auf dem Kopf sind kennzeichnend für die Art.

Indian star toitoises (→image 1&2), a Malayan box turtle (image 3), and other turtles are kept in Kobe City Oji Zoo (神戸市立王子動物園).
They were smuggled into this country, but the (Air-)port inspectors discovered and confiscated them. However, it is often impossible to return those reptiles to their original habitats. Therefore the zoos protect and care for the pitiful animals safely, cooperating with Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums as well as Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (image 4).
I hope they will live a long and happy lives there.
