I received marketing #spam from #USAA today which had no unsubscribe instructions in the footer, in violation of the CAN-SPAM act.
The spam did have a hidden List-Unsubscribe header with a link and email address in it. I tried the link; it generated an error message. I tried the email address; it didn't bounce, but I also didn't receive an acknowledgement so I have no idea if it worked. (1/4)

It used to be that #USAA was the gold standard for everything. Car insurance, home insurance, banking, car rentals, _everything_.

Now, not so much. Their DriveSafe app doesn't even work half the time, which is fun

USAA is on my last nerve with their dividend scam.

I thought they haven’t been disbursing dividends because I haven’t received one in the 4 years I have had insurance with them.

Nope. Turns out it depends on what “company of placement” you are insured with. I said I thought I was insured with USAA. She said yes but your company of placement is Garrison.

I asked who this Garrison company is that has my data, I have never heard of them and I did not request this.

Then she tells me Garrison is not a different company it’s part of USAA and they decide the company of placement when we sign up with them.

Ok, so USAA decides what company of placement we are put in within their own company and then they randomly decide which companies of placement get dividends?

Sounds like a scam.

I’ll probably be going back to progressive for auto insurance. They paid my brother’s burial benefits super fast & idk if it was an error but they paid the whole grave stone invoice even though $2400 of it was for 3 footstones that were not my brother’s. Oh, and they don’t deny claims if THC is found to be in your system because they acknowledge that doesn’t mean you were under the influence at the time of the accident.

#USAA #insurance

So, #USAA has pretty much ENTIRELY succumbed to #enshittification, eh?

And another thing… The check attached to this letter from #USAA says on it, "Payment Explanation: 2025-12-22". What the fuck does that mean? Why is the "payment explanation" they offered a date several months in the future? This makes no friggin' sense. 🤦 smdh

It grinds my gears that #USAA says in this letter that they "may" report this income to the IRS and it "may" be be taxable, and I should consult with my tax advisor to find out for certain.
But that's impossible with the information they've provided. They haven't said _how_ they're going to report it to the IRS, and they haven't provided enough detail about what it is compensation for, for any tax advisor to be able to render an informed opinion on the matter. So dumb.

Perhaps this is one of the initiatives kicked off by #USAA's new CEO to try to transform the company, from the absolute dumpster fire it has turned into in recent years, into something more closely resembling the decent company it once was.
If so, then good for him, and maybe things like this will help the bank preserve some customers. However, it's too little, too late for me. I'll cash their check, but I'm still leaving.

I just got the weirdest letter, with a check for $325, from #USAA.
They claim this check is compensation for the "inconvenience" I experienced with a dispute I filed some time between 2018 and 2024.
Per my records, I did file at least one dispute of charges on my USAA credit card during that time, and they did mishandle at least one of them.
Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but maybe they could have put something in the letter about which dispute they're paying me off for and why?

Scan of letter from USAA. Too long for all the text to fit here, but here's how it starts which is the important part:
Dear Jonathan I Kamens,
We're committed to our core values of service, loyalty, honesty and integrity; it’s a commitment we share with those we serve. We’re writing to you regarding a dispute we received between January 1, 2018, and December 19, 2024. To acknowledge that inconsistent bank processes may have caused you inconvenience with this dispute, we’ve included a one-time payment to compensate you.
About Your Check
Attached is a check in the amount of $325.00. This represents a one-time payment for the inconvenience.
To the extent required by law, USAA Federal Savings Bank will report the payment to the IRS. Consult your tax advisor to determine if these funds will have any impact on your taxes.
For more information about why you're receiving this communication, visit usaa.com/accountreviews.
You May Request Additional Compensation
If you think the total amount isn’t enough to cover the financial harm you may have experienced as a direct result from the dispute, you may request additional compensation by submitting a request through a Documented Remediation Claim process.

During the last #shutdown in 2019, the #NavyFederalCreditUnion & #USAA offered special loans to #military members, & they plan to do so again…. #NavyFederal said it would "offer 0% APR loans to eligible members whose pay may be affected, continuing a tradition of assistance seen during previous shutdowns in 2011, 2013 & 2018-2019, when nearly 20k members received support." USAA plans to offer eligible members with accounts a "no-interest loan equal to the amount of one net paycheck."

I give #USAA credit for one improvement: it appears that they have finally listened to their members clamoring for live chat. At some point recently they appear to have added the ability to chat with USAA customer service reps online through their website.
This is a real improvement, but it's too little, too late, at least for me.

#USAA just sent out this video bragging about supposed recent improvements:
youtube.com/watch?v=s1XgKVppBbU
This video was heavy on meaningless platitudes and light on specifics. To the extent that specific "improvements" were mentioned, they have nothing to do with the reasons why I'm in the process of leaving USAA:
1) Their website regularly malfunctions.
2) They won't do business asynchronously (via email or online messaging).
3) Half the time I ask them to do something they screw it up.

... And this is not a joke ... I was literally told once by a phone teller that we wouldn't have to worry about all this security stuff if everyone would just get a job. As if that's an excuse for security and fraud detection this poor.

This is random and I don't know who needs to hear it, but don't bank with . They're everything you would expect from a bunch of military dropouts. Their password security is virtually non-existent (max length is 12 characters, no spaces/other special characters allowed, MFA over unencrypted protocols only), and when they freeze your assets because of a $3 purchase to a vendor you frequently spend small amounts with (this happens twice yearly or so), they tell you... 🧵

4/ On a positive note, I had a promising phone interview with USAA. They’re running a two-part process and recommended me for the next hiring stage. I’m hopeful that this could be a turning point.

This is hilarious and sad.

I know for a fact that my #USAA auto policy doesn’t cover acts of terrorism. If you don’t want to read your whole insurance policy because it’s long and boring, you can just look at the exclusions part. It’s important to read that anyway.

I once told some of my siblings in passing that #MAGA looks like a bunch of war veterans, which is kinda ageist and racist, but also funny and true.

Ask #ChatGPT to generate a picture of #USAA members and you'll just get #MAGA voters.

I recently applied for a #PenFed bank account so that I can switch to their credit card from #USAA's, because USAA has gone to shit.
* PenFed's online identity verification was painless.
* When their app detected that it couldn't check my credit because my credit reports are frozen, it told me the problem, told me which bureau I had to unfreeze, and walked me through the process of unfreezing it for the check and refreezing it afterward.
I'm impressed. Very encouraging!
