I rarely leave my neighborhood these days, so when the opportunity came last weekend to visit a town about 80 km from my home, I took a little detour to visit and take photos of the town’s only national historical marker.
(Those who have been following me long enough know that documenting historical markers in #Wikidata and #WikimediaCommons is one of my niche interests.)

How many images of envelopes does #WikimediaCommons need I wonder. Category:Postal_covers currently has 16,582 files in it, which doesn't seem like all that many. I'm no philatelist, but I can probably add 1,000 or so…
Been working on some modifications to my script for importing and exporting tabular data pages on Wikimedia Commons from/to CSV/Excel.
Struggling a bit with coming up with the best method to deal with the localized data, as it makes the tables multidimensional, which is hard to represent in Excel.
Considering making each language a separate sheet in the exported file….

Здравствуйте, я загружаю много (как посмотреть) фото (и не только) в Wikimedia Commons . Вместе с Википедией, это важный сервис, особый: некоммерческий, тоже живет на донаты, без рекламы и платных аккаунтов, всё содержимое в свободных лицензиях. Базовый путь загрузки - через веб клиент, который сложный, это не в Фейсбук перетянуть фото. Экосистема, инфраструктура, комьюнити огромно, есть десяток инструментов загрузки . И внезапно, за вечер, я сделал, по моему мнению, один из лучших инструментов, о котором мечтал годами. Получилось так быстро потому что это скрипт для gThumb, который использует официальное SDK Pywikibot на Питоне, и библиотека для чтения/записи IPTC тегов - где указываются категории, категории это важно - Коммонс это не помойка, при загрузке и после ребята стараются систематизировать артефакты, у каждого файла может быть много категорий.

@Rairii Is this in any way related to the "wikirazzi" phenomenon? Wikipedia's "replaceable fair use" policy rejects photos of living people that aren't released under a Creative Commons license or other license for free cultural works. This encourages Wikipedia editors to become paparazzi, stalking celebrities just to snap a photo that can be used in an article.

1. Fotografieren (logisch)
2. In Lightroom bearbeiten
3. nach Wikimedia Commons hochladen
4. Schauen, ob das Objekt einen Eintrag im KEK (Kulturelles Erbe der Stadt Köln, ein Projekt vom Historisches Archiv mit Rheinischem Bildarchiv) hat. Ja :-)

I don't think Wikimedia Commons is enough of an alternative, but is the best that exists (edit: apart from Panoramax! see next post).
- Wikimedia foundation is underfunded and gets attacked by many powerful people who are against it.
- All images uploaded are licensed as Creative Commons or Public Domain, which is good but... (edit: actually most people are fine with this, and it's important for images to be freely licensed so they can be used by osm editors)
