I’m looking for east coast #Indigenous stories about will o’ wisps. I can find lots of white people stories, but there’s gotta be some Mi’kmaq/Maliseet/Passamaquoddy stories, too. Anyone? #folklore #mikmaq #passamaquoddy #maliseet #wolastoqey #WillOWisp #GhostFire #JackOLantern #legend #legends #superstition #wabanaki #maritimes #Indigedon

"Mislead night-wanderers, laughing at their harm?"

From A Midsummer-Night’s Dream, illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1908)

A little sprite, called Puck or Robin Goodfellow, entices two night travellers (both white men in travelling clothes with sacks on sticks filled with their belongings) to walk deeper into a bog. The sprite holds a shining light (similar to a will-o'-the-wisp) and is laughing as the two men flounder, one trying to pull the other out of the clinging mud. By his desperation, the one who is stuck in the mud looks like he may be being sucked under. The whole scene is dark, with shadows around them and dark clouds above them.

Little behind on #Mythology #Mermay but I'm catching up. Here's the bludnik, a swamp-dwelling demon that lures people into the swamp to kill them! Charming old fellow, right?

Today's #mythology #Mermay features the will-o-wisp. Though not strictly aquatic, he does live in swamps and lights up the paths deeper in. Would you follow?

Will-o-the-wisp and snake, by Hermann Hendrich (1823)

At dusk, in a green field with a small lake, a large snake is watching two will o' wisps dance in the air above it. They appear as personified white flames (flame-like heads with bodies, arms and legs). In the background is a decrepit old church and cemetery next to a large tree.
