#writingMonth

2025-06-05

... And after spending a bit of time this evening, I am now at 329 words out of my 10,000 word goal for June.

I'm tracking my writing for this project and goal with #WritingMonth by @amin (which is working great, can't wait to see how it improves in the future).

@EVDHmn

I have a dedicated server I use to host my Fediverse instance, #WritingMonth, and my search engine. Adding on a few static sites didn't even register, computing-power wise. ;)

I did write up a post on good cheap blogging options, though: https://benjaminhollon.com/musings/blogging-on-a-budget/

#WritersCoffeeClub June 3 Have you ever done a writing challenge? How did it go?

Last year, for the first time ever, I participated in #WritingMonth here on Mastodon.
I always thought this wasn't for me. I don't do well under extra pressure. But I needed a push to start writing my historical novel, being somewhat scared that I'd embark on another 12-year project - so, I did it.

And I wrote the entire book in 6 weeks.

Now that we’re all talking about #WritingMonth again I realized I set myself a goal and completely forgot about it. So…

-The sequel to “the bat and ball” at https://gorkmo.fyi/tales is now officially “coming soon”
-My first #blost will reflect on this year’s #UFL season if I don’t think of anything else beforehand

And to those who need encouragement- summer is a great time to get started on things. Block off some time to get the momentum rolling!

First #WritingMonth update so far—I've added "minutes spent" as a goal type. Hours might also be helpful, but would likely need fractions/decimals, which would take a fair amount of work to integrate.

Since #NaNoWriMo's website just went down, I think it's a good time for me to start up a second round of development towards #WritingMonth, my free and open source alternative goal tracking/sharing site.

To help me prioritize my work, what features would y'all like to see the most? Here are a few commonly-requested features I have on my list:

Any of those that stand out?

Hm, out of nowhere this morning I'm getting division by zero errors thrown when I visit my #WritingMonth dashboard; I'm guessing it is something to do with it being a new month now. I'll diagnose and push a fix.

EDIT: This should be fixed now.

#WritingMonth is back up, though it might take up to ten minutes before your computer recognizes the new DNS.

If you are having issues ten minutes from now, let me know and I'll diagnose.

#WritingMonth will be down briefly as I migrate it to a different server. Shouldn't be more than fifteen minutes or so.

I decided to post them every three days instead. That way all of the episodes will be out by the end of April (the last one should be published on 30.4)

Things become real, as we learn the real intention behind the letters

Guess who started a new project on #WritingMonth!

For May I'm mostly dealing with ideation and outlining, so I'm tracking words. Once I have a firm plan in place, hopefully by june, I'll start aiming to finish a number of chapters every month until I'm done.

The goal here is to finish a book, not to finish it quickly.

Side note, this reminds me I need to chck in with the issue list on WritingMonth.org's codeberg and start seeing if I can knock out some work for it!

I'm happy to announce that the first episode of "Letter to the Editor", a five-part mini fiction series I'm working on, is now live.

I don't want to give away too much, which is why the tags are vague, but I hope you'll enjoy.

You can read it here: https://ccw.icu/blog/letter-to-the-editor-letter-i/

PS: I'll probably announce the upcoming episodes in this thread once they are live.
(I'm currently planning to upload them every four days, we'll see about that)

I tried my luck figuring out how old a random notebook was.
And decided to write a short post about, because chronological dating is a lot of fun, as I've discovered for myself 😍

I'm running late again 🫠

But after finding the photos in my gallery, I finally finished my latest blog post recipe.
I hope you are hungry, because we are making falafel(ish): https://ccw.icu/blog/falafelish/

25. How long does it typically take you to draft a novel?

One month for the first rough draft, usually in November (#WritingMonth) or, in the past, also April, when that other site was still a thing. After that month, forever, because the draft is so rough that it neds so many changes that I lose confidence in the story.

Do you have deadlines? External or self-imposed?

I only have very few external deadlines since I retired and I love that fact, had enough during my worklife. I do my best work under pressure though, sadly.
#ScribesAndMakers is giving me internal deadlines, something I missed without realising it. It's giving me a bit of structure but is gentle enough to not be stressful, and I love to help with it and have a lot of fun.
Writing-wise only during #WritingMonth.
