Speaking of stupid crap #ABgov is pulling: By now many if you know that #AISH recipients were all forced to apply for the Federal Canada Disability Benefit which would provide up to $200/mo to qualifying #DisabledCanadians and which #Alberta is clawing back, dollar for dollar.

What I didn't realise is that this is being managed federally similar to a tax credit, so pays from July 2025 through June 2026 inclusive.

Which also means recipients get a lump sum payment for prior months to whenever they were accepted.

Sometime after you provide AISH with proof of your #CDB, they will then have the collections dept contact you to "recover" this overpayment from the prior months' "overpayment."

So for goodness sake, set that lump sum aside and don't touch it until uou can just send it to them, or they will be deducting significantly MORE per month than JUST the regular monthly Federal benefit.

Just got off the phone with #811 to book my 2025 #Alberta #covid and #flu #vaccinations.

Holey moley what a nightmare. TBC, the 811 agent was FAB once I got through. ❤️

But, 811 has ~57 seconds worth of messages prior to being able to make ANY selections.

Currently it is x3 for booking a covid vaccination.

THEN, once in x3, you need to select x2 for booking (as x1 is 'for information about covid').

A lovely intercept comes on to explain 'higher than usual call volumes' (you know, what every phone system ever has said pretty much for the last decade🙄) AND THEN sends you to on-hold music … only to most-likely have ANOTHER message intercept to let you know they're too busy and "goodbye." 😳😡

Fastest redial and menu selections I could manage was every 2 minutes. Took 1 hour of redialling like this to get to the actual on-hold #queue, and was then another hour on-hold.

If using a cellphone, make sure you have a powerbank/charger handy! 😬

Hey, what's going on with the #CBC weekend #news service? When Tim Devlin (#Edmonton ?) did the weekend news, there was weather, etc for all major centres in #Alberta.

Today (May 17) we're getting #Calgary-only news and #WeatherForecast

I have no issues that CBC streamlines news for weekends, but if it is broadcasting province-wide, the news/weather needs to reflect that.

Absolutely amazing news! After Friday's bargaining was held over into Saturday, a settlement was reached for about 4,000 Education Workers in Edmonton and Fort McMurray! About 1,000 workers in Fort McMurray have been on strike for 5 months, and about 3,000 workers in Edmonton for over 2 months, holding the line in the worst freezing cold Alberta can offer.

CUPE president Rory Gil reflects my feelings for our education workers the best:

“I’m in awe of the workers in Edmonton and Fort McMurray who stood their ground, in weather as cold as minus 51 degrees, to win a fair contract,” said Gill. “Their fortitude, their determination, and their solidarity won the day.”

“Education support workers are critical to our school system, and today they finally won the respect they deserve,” said Gill.

Education workers in Edmonton are expected to return to work on Wednesday or Thursday, after the settlement is ratified by CUPE members on Monday or Tuesday. No details will be shared until the members have had a chance to see them, but I'm sure if the bargaining team is satiated then the members will be too!

This fight should never have been needed, as having enough respect for our most important educational workers, who support all of our children, to give them a living wage should never be in question.

Yet here we are, in a fight against Capitalist interests who see human beings as a worthless commodity, and the government who seeks to cut and slash public services to defund and privatize them, handing them over to these same profiteering interests.

These job actions have not ended. About 2,000 Education workers in Calgary and Parkland county have more recently joined the strike lines and have not yet reached a settlement. Strikes and labour actions are striking up all across the country, as we have reached the point of end-stage capitalism and they have taken far too much from us for far too long. This profiteering and hoarding of wealth by the few is not sustainable for the many who are struggling and unable to live. This exploitation must come to an end, and it will not end without COLLECTIVE ACTION!

Pubic sector workers across Canada have been organizing, from postal workers to education workers to health workers. Private sector union workers in the United States, home to the world's most powerful monopolies, have been organizing and striking back! If your workplace is not organized, it's time to start. A non-unionized job is an UNSUSTAINABLE job. No matter how much you love your job, it will not love you back. Protect your future.

In solidarity.

Oh definitely! Alas, I haven't run across antone really discussing the #fuel issue during the #Jasper #wildfire #EvacuationOrder.

I have no doubt it would also be a problem.

It was definitely discussed during the 2016 #FortMcMurray #ymm evacuation, as temp fueling stations, water, etc had to be set up en route.

12. The tourism aspect of the 2024 #Jasper #AB #EvacuationOrder brings to light many issues around #wildfire safety and survival I had not previously considered during the 2016 #FortMcMurray #ymm wildfire.

I'm just a regular person, not an emergency planner. I expect most folks enjoying a holiday--whether local or from distant lands--are likewise not especially knowledgeable about navigating a large-scale emergency.

9. This is where differences from the 2016 #FortMcMurray #ymm #EvacuationOrder are becoming more evident: #Jasper #AB, unlike Fort Mac, is chock-full of tourists. Many of whom do not speak English or do not know it well.

In all the chaos and confusion of fleeing #wildfires, imagine having to do so when you can't clearly understand directions, or explanations, or other information critical to your safety. 😱

A few of things about the current emergency (as of June 24, 2024) in #Jasper, #Alberta:

Note: I am in #Edmonton, ~5 hours west, 'watching' at a distance.

1. On the surface, the Jasper #evacuation could seem similar to that of #FortMcMurray #ymm eight years ago (2016). Some similarities include limited highway options for egress and the entire population needing to leave at the same time.

Nods. Very true. I'm still amazed that no one was killed in the #FortMcMurray #ymm #wildfire a few years' back. Same egress problem, diff area. ☹️

In my part of the province, there are Range Roads and Township Roads all over the place due to how land was surveyed for farming west of Winnipeg, Manitoba. While these are often gravel, they at least provide for 'organic' escape routes that some key single-highway communities don't necessarily have access to.

Y'know, since #Alberta apparently no longer has a reliable grid in the summer, plus sustained killer-temperature heatwaves, perhaps it's time to require landlords to strike out clauses prohibiting efficient window-based #AirConditioning because while portable ones are much better than preventable heat death, they cost a LOT MORE in energy (price and amount used from grid).

Just a thought. 🤔

Brilliant! 😂 I saw someone on Twitter post a copy of a letter to their MLA Ric McIver, also Minister of Municipal Affairs.

The letter detailed a number of problems that need fixing in their community, and pointed out that they would normally call 311 for this but since the UCP want to be in charge of everything [paraphrased], they were sending it directly to him.
