Botamochi and ohagi are popular during the equinoctial weeks, when they are made as sacred offerings and enjoyed as tasty snacks.
Glutinous rice is soaked, cooked and formed into a ball. Around this ball a thick sweet bean paste is packed on.

Botamochi and ohagi (although basically the same sweet) differ in textures. Botamochi has smooth bean jam, whereas ohagi has a rough bean jam.An unusual tomato flavored ohagi for outdoor tea.Some variations on botamochi (plain, kinako and sesame).

Food plays an important roll at Higan (彼岸).

On the first and last day of the equinoctial week, rice dumplings (団子 'dango') are offered at the family altar. Rice cakes covered in bean jam (botamochi in spring and ohagi in fall) are presented mid-week.

A twist on the usual ohagi (sticky balls of rice covered in red bean jam) for spring. Less well known are the summer and winter versions of ohagi, available around the solstices.

Seasonal names for ohagi:
🌸spring = botamochi (牡丹餅 'peony')
⛱️summer = yofune (夜舟 'night boat')
🎑autumn = ohagi (御萩 'bush clover')
🌨️winter = kita-mado (北窓 'northern window')

Hagi (萩), mentioned numerous times in the Man'yōshū (万葉集), is one of the great symbols of Autumn.

Representing bashfulness, affection and a meditative spirit, the flower lends its name to 'ohagi' (おはぎ), a sweet of red beans served around the Autumn Equinox (お彼岸).

今西軒算是我們每訪京都必買的定番了,尤其喜愛黃豆粉口味的萩餅。早上起床太太說想吃今西軒,看了時間已經九點十分,馬上跳起來著裝走路到飯店附近的今西軒。到達時距離開店的九點半還有十五分鐘左右,前面已經有十組客人在排隊了。

黃豆粉一如往常(?)地賣得最快,根本來不及補到櫃檯直接從後台裝進塑膠盒內。想吃黃豆粉口味的,請盡可能十點前到達

買了兩個黃豆粉口味,以及兩種紅豆口味各一,回到飯店當作早餐的一部分馬上吃掉了 XDDD
