I’m an asst prof of history at a small, rural public university in Colorado. My training is in modern world history & the British Empire, with secondary fields in French (colonial) history and book history, and my research focuses on race and empire—how the Empire (and esp. British Columbia and Queensland) was imagined as a white space.

One thing that’s a bit of a hassle with Mastodon is that you can’t immediately follow people on other instances.

You have to copy the username and search for it on the server that has your account.

To make this easier, I’ve created a little bookmarklet. Press it, and you’ll be taken to the same account as viewed from the masto host you are on.

I grew up in the industrial North of England, the only star I saw was John Barnes, so a camping trip out to Ashburton Lakes after a move to NZ with its bortle 1/2 dark skies stunned me, and hooked me on astrophotography for life.

Sure, Mastodon is a lil glitchy sometimes, and there are definitely fediverse-wide moderation and UX issues to work out, and sometimes the server has to take a lil nap. Still, this is the first time in ten years (as a person who had well over 100k Twitter followers) that I haven’t gotten hit on then insulted in DMs, dealt with my family being OSINTed and threatened, been yelled at for not producing more content for free, or been called a unrepeatable slur during a whole week since 2014 or so. Plus most of my pals are here!

It is also the first time I haven’t been physically sick from going down negative news rabbit holes thanks to the algorithm for a whole week.

It’s pretty good from my perspective. I’m scared for my “brand” and therefore future income, but I don’t want to go back.

On a November afternoon in the mountains of Mayo, most photographers wouldn’t bother going out to take photos. The weather is too bad, it’s too dark, it’s cold, it’s raining and windy. And I’m thinking to myself, hang on a minute - where’s my camera! :-)

For the photographers; I left the telegraph poles there because they stop the eye been led out off the frame - they keep the viewer in the scene. That’s the way I see it.

@manders yeah, she got a bad case of Lyme (even though she was on anti-flea/tick) a few months back and it did a number on her kidneys, so this was a follow-up. Her protein is still high in her urine and her bp is a little high, so we're going to have to keep her on some meds for a while longer. Thanks for asking, she's a trooper!

Pssst. Is anyone out there? Trying to find ways to stay optimistic about my experience here on #Mastodon but little momentum gained thus far.

Starting at a new instance means a re-introduction seems in order to my new #histodons profile. I’m a historian of early American communications, politics, and business and teach at a small, public liberal arts university in the Boston metro area.
I wrote a book about the printers and the circulation of news during the American Revolution, and now I’m working on a broader history of the U.S. Post Office and the way Americans have used it to debate questions of public and private services.

I'm a mom and I'm sure my 3 year old could build us a pool with all the construction vehicles he has. After becoming a mom, I learned the difference between an excavator, a front loader, a backhoe, and a bulldozer.

I'm also a software engineer at Microsoft. Back-end development for large scale distributed systems is my thing.

I try my hardest to learn the piano and music theory on me free time.

@frooned I just finished Fairy Tale, Stephen King's newest, and I really enjoyed it! It's a little fantasy and a little cosmic-ey horror!
