The entrance of an apartment building from perhaps the 1960s. A minimalist staircase swoops up from a marble foyer towards the upper floors and doglegs down to the basement. There’s wood paneling on the left hand wall, unornamented, with a white painted radiator, and stairs from street level to the foyer. The really striking feature is that the rear wall of the foyer is plate glass, flooding the space with light and highlighting the curve of the suspended stairs. Through the glass, the balconies and flat roofs of other buildings, solar water heaters.

The large rectangular grid above an underground train tunnel. A human shadow on the grid itself, arms raised and elbows bent, bringing hands to face to hold the phone. Through the grid, the concrete spaces deep below and, where the grid shadow’s face would be, another shadow, smaller, denser, distant and dark.

The leaves above make the scaffolding that holds up this stone shell of a house look almost like a pergola. There’s scaffolding inside too, and a doorway ornamented by boards. Only the corner of the house is in the image, the corner column of the concrete porch on the left and a little of the green construction cloth that shrouds it that I snuck the camera past. It’s been there, like this, for some time, on the steps at the edge of the back of the Kallimarmaro, coming down into Pagrati, a quiet and appealing, if somewhat inaccessible street.

Through an empty window, more scaffolding, more windows beyond, sunlight and the roofless sky.
There’s a repeating pattern to the scaffolding framework seen at different distances that gives something of the air of an abstract painting, a study in parallels, diagonals, and right angles.

A cluster of columnar grave markers all grouped together at the archaeological site of the Kerameikos cemetery. They are about waist high and made of weathered marble, mostly unadorned, with a ring near the top and names carved into them.
Pine trees, and, in the background, a bit of the site’s lovely little museum.
