In the Philopappou neighbourhood.
On the left, a one storey neoclassical house in some ruin, with a gate to the side, and on the right part of a three or four storey apartment building.
The older house is a faded sienna yellow with grey wooden shutters and a terracotta tile roof, graffiti under the one window. The wrought iron get has been supplemented with a steel grille above. Just above the roof, the top fronds of a palm tree.
The newer building is concrete painted white, with balconies the length of the facade, bright with bougainvillea and lavender flowers.
A tree in the depths of the alley between.

The leaves above make the scaffolding that holds up this stone shell of a house look almost like a pergola. There’s scaffolding inside too, and a doorway ornamented by boards. Only the corner of the house is in the image, the corner column of the concrete porch on the left and a little of the green construction cloth that shrouds it that I snuck the camera past. It’s been there, like this, for some time, on the steps at the edge of the back of the Kallimarmaro, coming down into Pagrati, a quiet and appealing, if somewhat inaccessible street.

It’s the three part wooden door in a ruin from the previous photo, from the other side. Here, the door is painted cream, as is the plaster, more of which remains, showing less ochre brickwork. It’s all going moss green where it meets the floor, and there’s a weed or two. The knocked-out panel, lower right, still leans against the remaining door. Across the whole, graffiti bubble writing in black outline and pale blue, illegible to me and tagged The Queens Kids.

$Shards radiating out from where a pane of plate glass has been struck but remaining in place - a star of fracture. The glass, painted white, has darkness inside, seeping out from the edges,flaking from the break lines - one shard, springing loose but still attached, lends depth. The building, interwar commercial, I think - in central Athens, on the edge of Plaka, is under renovation.$

Behind the horizontal railings of a rear courtyard, a spiral staircase rises up the back of a small apartment building. Railings and staircase are both made of metal and probably date from the early part of the last century.

A large industrial garage-type door of aluminum and glass has been spray painted with a graffiti tag so ambitious it covers everything. The tag is silver, red, orange, purple. You can only tell where there’s glass underneath because some panes have broken, leaving broad vertical strips of darkness to interrupt the colour. This is a close-up, two strips of broken window against the paint in between.

In the stairwell of an old apartment building, the shadows of the railings - vertical bars and a handrail - lit from different sources meet and cross on the wall, one faint, one dark. It looks like a black and white photograph but was taken in colour, it’s just there’s nothing there but peeling white wall and shadows.

A set of white marble steps, very plain, and their railings. The railings are painted very pale grey. Apart from the top and bottom rail, which follow the line of the stairs, they are widely spaced diagonal bars, single in one direction, double in the other. They cross and form diamonds the size of my hand. At the bottom corner of each diamond there is a smaller diamond of solid metal, about the size of a teabag.

Through the frame of a broken door panel, the out of focus interior of an abandoned house. A room with a floor strewn with beams and debris, the far wall showing brick and mortar below, plaster above, including a bit of decorative paintwork to the left of an interior door aligned with our viewpoint and a further door to the courtyard outside. All in shades of mud and nicotine brown, with a bit of yellowing cream where the plaster remains. It’s the three openings that make it work, the broken outer door, the fallen door between two rooms straddled by its doorframe, the glimpse of daylight through the far doorway.

The leaves of a houseplant, I don’t know the species but big broad leaves on stalks, covered in the thin translucent plastic sheeting used to protect furniture when reddecorating. The effect, with the light behind them, is to outshine the shapes of the leaves arcing diagonally towards upper left, in shadow against a misty veil.
