In analyzing both public and proprietary data about data centers as a whole, as well as the specific needs of #AI, the researchers came to a clear conclusion. Data centers in the US used somewhere around 200 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, roughly what it takes to power Thailand for a year. AI-specific servers in these data centers are estimated to have used between 53 and 76 terawatt-hours of electricity. On the high end, this is enough to power more than 7.2 million US homes for a year.

Someone came into my mentions to spread the common misconception that undocumented immigrants are bankrupting Medicaid. So folks, say it with me now: “Undocumented immigrants are never eligible for Medicaid or CHIP.”

No really. And Emergency Medicaid coverage that pays hospitals for uncompensated care of people who are not on Medicaid but otherwise eligible accounts for less than 1% of Medicaid spending.

Btw, if Republicans cut Medicaid, be prepared to see disabled elderly homeless people. Medicaid pays for about 2/3 of America’s nursing home beds. When the money stops, those people are evicted, an ambulance is called, and they wind up in the ER. They have nowhere to go, no funding for another nursing home, and no emergency medical problem. Sooner or later they stop being boarded in the ER and wind up on the streets.

Under Pete “whiskey dick” Hegseth’s leadership, the US Marine Corps changed their grooming standards in a way that will result in expulsion of mainly black Marines. Many black men have an inflammatory response to close shaving, causing painful scarring. The military knows this, and decades ago issued waivers allowing neatly kept beards for service members in this situation. Now the Marines are doing away with it. This hurts readiness, is overtly racist, and is fucking stupid.

Very excited about Hayes Promenade as the next SF spot to go 24/7 car-free, and since this article doesn't mention it I want to shout out @deanpreston for his consistent support for the events that led to this possibility.

SF should also quickly build Parcel K affordable housing now that the excuse of wanting to keep the temp Proxy space will be far less relevant: car-free Hayes St substitutes for it perfectly.
