Indonesia’s Supreme Court has upheld the government’s decision to block further expansion of the Tanah Merah oil palm project in Papua, preserving a Jakarta-sized swath of primary rainforest.

The ruling strengthens the forestry ministry’s authority to halt deforestation and was influenced by testimonies from the Indigenous Awyu tribe, who rely on the forest for survival.

'The first Word was spoken by a woman. It was ‘No’. Acted out in sounds and gestures and exploding into a chorus of laughter, it was a signal to the male sex that their behaviour needed to stop.

Chris Knight and Camilla Power explain how menstrual bleeding was constructed as the world’s earliest taboo and how blood-red ochre came to symbolize ritual potency as our species emerged.

How ritual, sex and economics were organized around the lunar cycle. Dark moon was time associated to menstruation and ritual of refusal of marital sex. Big-game hunting was prepared as waxing moon increased light at night, with the hunt completed by full moon. Then taboos were lifted for flesh to be enjoyed: cooking and marital sex.
