Utqiaġvik, Alaska average temperature for the winter 2024-25 of -4.6F (-20.3C) is the fifth highest in the past 105 years, and so was milder than ANY winter before 2017. All but two of the ten mildest winters have occurred since 2013. The last "top ten" coldest winter was 1976-77. Thinning sea ice is playing a large role in driving the dramatic warming, especially in the 21st century.

WOW, thank you all for the outpouring of support. Know that I am reading all of them and want to thank everyone individually.

Also, I did decide to share on Twitter/X (only to raise attention for the NOAA community)... Never again. Truly a horrific space. I've dealt with trolls for many years and thought I'd seen the worst of the worst. It has taught me unbelievable patience and compassion. But nothing compares to the hatred on Twitter/X that I received from my last post.

I am begging people to please leave that website for good.
