@W9SSN Yah, our vent pipe is ABS. I have a few other antennas around & near the roof (2m/70cm vertical, 10m vertical, 6m halo, long wire, & a hexbeam) and they all have grounds.
I have a patch panel in the shack with quick connect PL-259s that I pull out when not in the shack or whenever I get a lightning alert on my phone or computer.
Also have a ground bar in the shack that goes outside to ground.
I may just wait out the storms & reconnect after they pass.
It’s only Field Day.

I haven’t seen any data showing antennas radiating RF from inside an attic attracts lightning.
If anyone has actual scientific papers/studies/proof of HF antennas radiating from inside an attic attracting lightning, please send me the link or PDF.
Don’t want to risk setting the house on fire - or frying a radio - from a lightning strike because of a backup antenna transmitting from INSIDE my attic during an electrical storm.

Toying with the idea of stringing my original 20m monoband dipole in the attic so I could at least have one band going while my main antennas are unplugged when my lightning app alerts at 30km away.
Will also have WX radar up on one of my computer screens. #StaySafe

Well, I finally got my callsign published in @ARRL QST magazine!
It was for my 7th place finish in Canada (2nd place in my ARRL section of O.N.E.) in the 2022 ARRL 10m contest.
I’m NOT a big contester and don’t have a monster station. I also slept a lot more than some do during contests. 🤣
I usually just play radio when there is a contest that interests me- either because it’s on 6m or 10m, a particular digital mode I want to use more, or some other factor.
This one was FUN!

1:45 into the #SMIRK 6m contest & I have a WHOPPING 2 FT8 contacts (2 points) and a brand new pulsing QRN that I can’t seem to filter.
Tried SSB with zero results.
Listened for CW as well. Zilch.
You know I’m hard up for contacts when I consider stumbling through CQ TEST on CW 🤣
I have only ever had 6 CW contacts and they were all short contacts with POTA Park activators. Jumping into contest 10-12 WPM CW might not be the smartest move. 🤣

I WAS excited to try my new Spiderbeam mast I picked up at Dayton @hamvention for my #POTA activation today, but it was too big for my Amazon drive-on mount!
May need to get someone to help me modify the mount to accept the mast (weld on a new mast receptacle pipe piece).
Alternately, I might be able to find a bit of ABS pipe that would fit the mast and just strap it to the existing mount with gear clamps…

On the way home from a short #pota activation at VE-5118. Mosquitoes were bad and no good spots with a breeze. My POTA Pup came along and my awesome Mrs. worked on her “POTA-Point” & took him out to stretch his legs & have some water.
Apparently only the 8th time this park has been activated. Poor conditions on 20m but was hunted by hams in 3 countries including Spain (hamstick haters don’t know what they’re talking about). 🤣

That awkward moment you finish a digital contact and have to run to the other room for 'urgent grandparent duties' and you return to see a bunch of missed calls... on 6m no less.
Oh well.

Finally made it to @hamvention Just a walk past the #POTA place on my way to attend a seminar. Already visited #RAC @ARRL @thersgb and a quick visit to @icom_inc_japan and #K2BSA Gonna take me all weekend to see everything!

For us “international attendees” to the Dayton @hamvention 2023 who use the world (and space) standard (Metric)… here is the current long range weather forecast for the #Hamvention2023 (subject to change obviously). I included the Thursday because it’s my travel day and there’s some events the night before (like a reception for us international attendees). Gonna pack a raincoat, hat, sweatshirt, etc. in the car because you never know. 🤣

Glad to see the @hamvention seminar schedule online! This being my 1st time attending #Hamvention I wanted to do as much planing as I could to maximize my experience & education.
Made myself a schedule of which seminars I'm going to & labelling printouts of the vendor maps for "Must Visit" booths.
Still need to find some #POTA merch supplier booths on my maps.
Also need to cross-reference some QSL cards to make sure ones that I don't have LoTW confirmations for can be checked at the @arrl booth.
