Sufficiency, climate action and nature restoration in Finnish North Karelia. I fly fish, ski, and hike. 🤠🏕️🎣🌲🇫🇮🇪🇺
I rarely see a better perspective in the short film form about nature restoration.
I found an incredible lake yesterday next to Kolovesi National Park. It is in a natural state with old-growth forests, but for some reason, it is unprotected!
Northern pike were biting today, and the weather was stormy. I will fish here many times in the future.
"Targeted interventions, such as implementing the Paris climate agreement, a shift to a healthier diet, improved food, and water- and nutrient-use efficiency, can effectively reduce the degree of transgression of the planetary boundaries, steering humanity towards a more sustainable trajectory (that is, if they can be implemented based on social and institutional feasibility considerations)."
The hiking season began on the Upper Koitajoki River near the border in Ilomantsi. I saw the old-growth forests, open bogs, and huts within 24 hours by going rather fast.
The backpack was medium-heavy, so I feel it now! The night was exciting because I read from the logbook that bear scat had been seen nearby.
It's a beautiful evening on the Kerma Rapids at Heinävesi. Stoneflies were hatching, and large trout were eating them on the surface. It's warm and sunny, and various birds are singing already.
”Finland's climate targets depend on reducing logging quotas, according to the latest report from the Climate Panel.”
The 2035 climate neutrality target was based on offsetting inadequate emissions reductions in e.g. transport with managed forest plantations - then they were overharvested and stopped growing.
”Overall, the municipal and regional elections were a setback for the governing parties. The decline is mainly due to the Finns Party, which saw its voter support collapse.”
Thank you, Finnish voters. We resisted Alt-Right populism and Russian cyberattacks against free elections.
March 2025 was the eleventh warmer than average month compared to this recent baseline in Finland. It is going to be ’interesting’ to see how the late spring and summer compare.
We had the least amount of snow in recorded history this winter in North Karelia.
Last chances to ski this year! It was a nice day, warm and sunny at Koli Ski. The winter was unusually mild and we didn’t have much snow, but that means the flood will be manageable for June fly fishing.
"The Orox adventure cargo bike defies extreme conditions to keep you going—no roads needed. This tenacious trooper packs up to two XL batteries to power you through extended off-grid explorations. It redefines what’s possible by bike with a massive Max Gross Vehicle Weight of up to 210 kg (462 lb) for best-in-class cargo capacity."
Damn, I'm getting a bike fever.
That was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. The e-MTB is included in the booking at Koveron Majatalo! Who needs a 4x4 car when you can have one of these?
I spent the day getting to know new places on the Rabbit River (Jänisjoki) in Tuupovaara. It is a beautiful region with nice huts to spend a night in.
”Finland's renewable power and heat production capacity, such as wind and solar, has increased rapidly in the past few years, leading to a collapse in the use of coal after the previous government in 2019 passed a law to ban coal from 2029.”
Season opened at Karvio! Not too many stoneflies were hatching today, but the weather was perfect with 10°C in the sun.
The new rod is powerful (casts into backing without much effort) and my flies swam nicely.
What a great day on the river yesterday. I didn't have my #FlyFishing gear, but I helped others spot the rising trout during the stonefly hatch.
"Many politicians do not dare to tackle sufficiency because they are afraid of being punished at the next election," said Jonas Lage, research associate at the Europa-Universität Flensburg. "Yet, there are examples at many political levels of successful, smoothly functioning sufficiency policies with a high level of approval."
"If everything is working correctly and we get to go out to nature and have our sauna, we don't want anything much more than that," Granlund said.
I discussed North Karelian happiness and climate work with Ronan Browne on All Points North.
”The number of Russian attacks nearly tripled between 2023 and 2024. Russia’s primary targets have included transportation, government, critical infrastructure, and industry, and its main weapons and tactics have included explosives, blunt or edged instruments (such as anchors), and electronic attack.”

”People in Finland think other issues are also important, including supporting the economy and creating new jobs (40%), action on climate change (33%) and democracy and the rule of law (32%).”
