Just discovered fcitx5 port on #android for #japanese #ime and it’s pretty nice. No need to install a bloated 400MB app full of trackers (I’m looking at you GBoard). It’s #floss and pretty straightforward with a plugin system to add languages you might need.

The only downside (for now) is the lack of hiragana layout, a.k.a. Godan, that is present in GBoard and former Mozc app. So you need to input #kana from a QWERTY layout, which feels quite weird at first.

@benoit I’ve successfully convinced my relatives to switch to Signal (or to use it with me at least). Most of them were surprised to see that it was as easy to use as WhatsApp (which they already all used at that point).

So switching to Signal is not that complicated. But I agree that one of the strong points of Apple is their integrated and optimized ecosystem of apps. Whether on macOS, iOS or iPadOS, for basic needs (most people to be honest), their apps are more than sufficient.
