Congratulations to ELEC 49X #capstoneproject team of Amelia Maclatchy, Owen Hooper, and Megan Stanke at Queen's University for placing 2nd in the ECE Awards competition for their "Autonomous Building Guide" capstone project and the development of GEORGE (i.e., the #robot). This was a super-fun co-supervision with the wonderful Melissa Greeff! Best of luck to this amazing student team as they all pursue careers in #robotics #engineering and/or advanced technology upon graduation this spring.

This week we say farewell to our long-time colleague Dr. Heshan Fernando (linkedin.com/in/heshanfernando) who is moving on to a new position at FP Innovations in Montreal, QC. Heshan has been a mentor and friend to many of us at Queen's Engineering—and he will be sorely missed! Yet, I have a strong feeling that our paths will cross again ... All the best Heshan!

Offroad Robotics and Ingenuity Labs researchers gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of Dr. Heshan Fernando who is moving on to a new position at FP Innovations.

The “Science News Cycle” by Jorge Cham is my favorite of his wonderful PHD Comics series.

Kicked off the AI course with ChatGPT's version of what they'll learn.

loom.com/share/74f859b1c2b5442

About 3 / 200 in the course hadn't heard of the system before, and I'll be spending the semester trying to convince them they shouldn't just ChatGPT their way through the rest of their university degree (no way the assessments they see in their program will keep pace with what can be largely automated).

Wheeee!

@fclc @Woolf_atthedoor @heidiploeg Definitely a question that many in the #academic/#education profession are pondering. I think we each need to step back and ask ourselves: Are we facilitating a valuable #learning experience? Should I care if my students search the Internet for answers/help or use #ChapGPT? No, as long as they are learning what I want them to learn! If the tools get in the way of learning then it is me who needs to adjust my #teaching.

@timglauert @SKV @Sheril The Catholic Church did, however, declare Galileo's assertion that the Earth revolves around the Sun (and not the other way around) to be heresy. Galileo was forced to live out the rest of his days under house arrest.

Here in #canada, today is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on #Violence Against #Women (women-gender-equality.canada.c). Please take a moment to #remember the hatred-driven murder of 14 young women #engineers at Polytechnique Montréal (December 6, 1989). Or better yet—attend a ceremony somewhere near you. And even better yet—take action and speak up against harmful behaviours.

The permanent Dec. 6 memorial in Beamish-Munro Hall at Queen's University was designed by Queen's alumna Haley Adams (Sc'21), and unveiled in 2020.

Had a chance to speak to the third-year class of Engineering Science Robotics (ESC 301) students at the University of Toronto last night about #mining and #construction #robotics, #entrepreneurship, #intellectualproperty, and on commercialization of research. Lots of great questions from a keen bunch of future roboticists—like, as an #academic, what's your strategy for ensuring great R&D doesn't die in the lab? Thanks again to Prof. Jon Kelly (twitter.com/domo_mr_roboto) for the invite to speak!

Cover slide for my presentation, called "Robots in Rocky Situations", delivered on November 23, 2022 at the University of Toronto's ESC 301 Robotics Seminar.
