As if leaving me with another submarine that now can't sink, to go with all the ships that now don't float, the Ukrainians even hacked our surveillance cameras so we filmed their attack for them.

Meet Shrike.
This brave fighter rightly decided that Russian drones had no place on our (and his personal) territory, and attacked one of them.
Unfortunately, the iron was stronger than the live bird, and he suffered a fractured right shoulder.
Fortunately, our drone pilots on this section of the front, who witnessed the incident, did not leave their suddenly wild brother in trouble, immediately took him in, and at the first opportunity evacuated him to Zaporizhia.
From there, thanks to Olesya Kulyk and Maryna Fesenko, the bird reached me in the Dnipro.
On Tuesday - reception, examination and consultation with a surgeon at the Kolibri Veterinary Clinic .
We will try to save the wing, but - it will be up to us.
The guys promised to pay for the treatment of the sudden assistant, so I'm not collecting funds right now.
I hope everything works out. Literally and figuratively

Thank you so much for him! His parents love him very much and have hope for his recovery.
Hang in there, Shrike!

#ThrowBackThursday to when I had a freeloader,and didn't really mind

A large red shouldered hawk, yeeting itself off the passenger side mirror of my truck. It's wings are spread wide, underbelly turned to the camera. There's a black truck and snowy fields in the background.

🌞 couldn't make it to the waterfront for sunrise this morning ... but the backyard sunrise wasn't too disappointing

Looking through an arched window twenty-three minutes after sunrise the blue sky is filled with complex gray and white clouds, with a few patches of sun breaking through. Pointed roofs of Harlem brownstones with red brickwork are across the street, and a taller apartment building can be seen in the distance.

Some very mellow beauty.

About 40 minutes before sunrise. Subdued tones of yellow, tan, blue-gray in the eastern sky. Clear near the horizon, but lots of streaky clouds above. The trees on the horizon are seen in black silhouette.

Another Morepork / Ruru being cared for by Judy Fentress. This one is very young and still has his baby fluff. Judy was featured in a Department of Conservation (DOC) blogpost celebrating her years of dedication to New Zealand native birds: blog.doc.govt.nz/2023/04/11/ju #owlsintowels 💛🦉 🇳🇿

A juvenile Ruru / Morepork still has his baby fluff - thin wisps of white feathers around his head that make him look like an old man. His eyes are wide, yellow, and lacking any thought behind them. Some darker markings above look like raised eyebrows, as if he's especially shocked by the featherless bipeds around him. He's wrapped in a blue tea towel, held to the chest of Judy the rehabilitator behind.

You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die. A spider’s life can’t help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.
