@hutch Bless you, it takes something for an artist to not hype their work as demanded by the publisher. I'll buy it! :)

In #astrophotography we tend to share only our best shots, which can be demotivating for newcomers. So here's one of my early #photo fails, from back when I was a teen.
I went out to shoot a meteor shower with my #film camera. When the pics came back from the lab a few days later, I was gutted to see they were all red! The light from an LED had leaked onto the film. But I learned from that mistake and taped that LED.
Do you have any similar fails to share?
I was at a meeting in the #IUGG23 conference this year where a few participants expressed scepticism that the #OzoneHole was in fact healing. Sadly looks like they were right, at least this year...
Good piece on it from @esa
By 1920, the network of interurbans in the US was so dense that a determined commuter could hop interlinked streetcars from Waterville, Maine, to Sheboygan, Wisconsin—a journey of 1,000 miles—exclusively by electric trolley.

i put together a long hopefully helpful curation of alternative game engines. there are so many, some deserve a lot more attention, all with their own strengths and benefits.

Some journals get it! "Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, do not currently satisfy our authorship criteria. Notably an attribution of authorship carries with it accountability for the work, which cannot be effectively applied to LLMs." https://www.springer.com/journal/146/submission-guidelines?IFA#Instructions%20for%20Authors_Manuscript%20Submission

@gsuberland I wonder if you found some? There's a cool guy on Jutuub with the handle "Applied Science" - he may know a source, or even how to make your own :)
In the run-up to Refugee Week, Stella Perrott reflects on the theme of compassion, how it is diminishing, and why we must rekindle it. What has happened in the last eight years to so radically shrink our compassion as a nation?

How does one end up doing #ScienceCommunication full-time? There is certainly more than one way, and each of them comes with a unique story. I'm thrilled @fMRI_guy agreed to tell us his story next Tuesday in the science communication interest group of Wageningen University and Research.
Mark your calendars for the 25th of April and drop me a message with your email address if you want to join the event as a non-WUR participant✌️
Hi all, my "What Makes a Good Theory? Interdisciplinary Perspectives" Lorentz workshop, keynote (https://youtube.com/watch?v=67X0TpnQeO0) paper is finally out — with shamelessly stolen title ‼️
What makes a good theory, and how do we make a theory good? http://psyarxiv.com/8fxds

@polexa @philmyboots It may be frustrating if you are experiencing some delays. Please be aware that onboarding so many new users at this rate is very taxing to systems administration. This happened with the last wave too and things got worked out pretty quickly. Please be patient and understanding of the admins and moderators behind the scenes building this amazing people powered social network for you.
This is significant ...
The German office for data protection and freedom of information hosts the official #Mastodon server for government departments
They are now calling for all ministries on the server to put their focus on Mastodon
They are also asking ministries which are not yet on Mastodon to join as soon as possible

The Respect for Marriage Act has just passed the House, 258-169, including 39 Republicans.
It will protect millions of LGBTQ families who otherwise would not have that protection. Senator Tammy Baldwin deserves enormous credit for her leadership in making this happen.
It is a very good thing that this bill is being passed, but it is also a signal of future obstacles. Do not get complacent. This does not end any battles for LGBTQ rights, but it does better prepare us for the battles to come.
Approaching a box of mixed small bolts & screws with essentially no hope to find a single searched for one... is way less of a let-down than finding three of the searched-for items - but not a fourth one :0)
It's tough for wildlife, for the homeless and those who can't afford to pay the bills... but my is it beautiful!
