It's the collective decisions of common humanity, ultimately, which decide the course of #evolution for technology. I contend that this cannot simply be FORCED the way that Sam Altman and #Microsoft and all the other tech execs want things to be forced—they want to believe that the general public can be compelled forever to swallow the latest tech-sector novelty, however faulty and exploitative, as if it were on the bleeding edge of inevitable progress.
I honestly do not think this process can be continued indefinitely. The geeklords have been growing distinctly unhappy: they thought they could manufacture consent for shitty #software indefinitely, but lately the bosses are complaining that they're no longer believed.

The #AI nerds want people to think their #LLM garbage generators are "more evolved" simply because they are always getting BIGGER. #OpenAI and #Anthropic et cetera are constantly grabbing for more and more resources to pile onto these things, allowing them to claim that they constantly getting better and better—merely because they're using more hardware, consuming more resources, serving more requests, and so forth. At least some of these "metrics" of purported improvement can simply be faked as I've said: the AI boys can, for example, always create as many false new users in order to claim ever-increasing growth and popularity of their devices.
But they can't ignore the selective pressures coming from the general population, who's gotten noticeably tired of the inflated claims and wild promises from the tech sector. The real-life experience of the ordinary person with #software and #technology has been growing steadily worse, not better, as the decades pass.
Worsening this picture is the degree to which ALL of these "metrics" much beloved and discussed by #technology and #software people can easily be faked. The purportedly unprecedented and roaring success of #ElonMusk, for example, probably rests largely upon false numbers. If Musk and his cronies need the appearance of a profit, they can shuffle money around fraudulently (to a degree—these days he's doing so badly, the fakery isn't any longer convincing.) If he needs to make X look like it's gaining millions of fresh users, Musk can easily fake that: creating false or duplicate user accounts is trivially easy.
Indeed, "generative AI" makes such fraud easier than ever. One can bet that a major attraction of #ChatGPT and other "agentic" #LLM tools to unscrupulous tech-sector scammers is that one may use them to create any number of fake people. Gleefully the geeklords trumpet the notion that such fake "AI" agents are indistinguishable from real people, all the better to cement the fraud they're hoping to perpetrate with the help of "generative AI".
Now let me bring this back into touch with the notions of #evolution applied to computing technology and #software. In this domain, to an extreme degree, tech execs and managers and similar persons are obsessed with optimization of a sort that seems increasingly disconnected from genuine concern for the quality and usability of their products.
What's an optimal #AI thingummy? What's an optimized software package? Generally that's measured in raw numbers of some sort: raw numbers of users, raw throughput of data, raw speed of operation, raw dollars accumulating.
Basically NONE of these numbers actually measure the genuine utility of the software or technological gimmick to a general audience.
