Here’s a throwback to the humble stubby — captured in original art commissioned for my latest newsletter. It’s more than just a bottle; it’s a symbol of an era in beer culture that may be on its way out.

Stubby bottles: cheap, cheerful, and full of memories. They were the lubricant for many barbecues and house parties. What’s your fondest stubby memory? Let’s share the stories!

What if brewers brought quality lagers and ciders back to the stubby bottle? I spoke with Reece Hugill of Donzoko Brewing about this nostalgic revival.

Could the stubby make a comeback? Find out in my newsletter.

Stubby bottles were once a supermarket staple with a hint of continental flair. From Tesco’s Biere D’Or to Kronenbourg, these bottles tell a story of changing beer culture. Read more in my newsletter.

I'm off to the Whisky Exchange's new Tequila and Mezcal Show later.

What's one thing you'd like me to find out while I'm there?

There’s something special about a stubby. It's more than beer, it's a ritual, a moment of pause, a cheap, reliable companion after a long day.

I explore what stubbies still mean today in my latest newsletter.

What’s your stubby ritual?

Hey friends, I've written a newsletter about stubby beers and why we still love them.

I've also pulled the boat out and included two interviews and some specially commissioned original art (from a human).

So if you like it, share the love!

Off to an event for Laphroaig tonight. I always say that I love it (and Islay drams in general) but it occurs to me that I've not actually had any in a few years now.

Will I *still* like it or will its briny iodine smoke slap me around the chops and poke a finger in my eye?

The 21 Year Old PX Cask Finished single malt from Bunnahabhain is an absolute banger.

Big sherry as you'd expect. Lots of nutty European oak. Charred pineapple, orange, toffee apple and cocoa powder. Creamy, complex, long and warming. Lovely.

A little 30cl sample bottle of the whisky is the only thing in focus. It has been opened, and its top lies in the foreground. Behind the bottle is a glencairn glass filled with the whisky itself, which is a rich copper/amber. Behind that is a small glass jug of water, with a glass pipette resting across its rim. You can't see it but the pipette has Bunnahanbhain branding also. All of this is set on a wooden tabletop in front of a dark background with some abstract spots of reflected light that are repeated here and there in the surface of the various glass objects already mentioned.

Draft beer on the plane. Beer tapped fresh from a wooden barrel was part of Lufthansa's Senator service until the 1970s.
