@mrak I recently found QuickWeather, which is exactly this. I like it so far.

It's both on f-droid f-droid.org/packages/com.omino and in the play store.

It can use data from two sources, open-meteo.com/ is easier to set up because it doesn't require an account/API key.

@gilesgoat @mntmn I've opened CT scans (also for 3D printing) with Fiji / imageJ . I don't remember the details, except that my data was a 3D array of density, and I extracted an iso- surface for further processing. The imageJ docs say it can read some DICOM: imagej.net/formats/dicom

Ha, sometimes I love the internet.

Seems this is a known issue and apparently fixed in this archive.org version. Hope it will transfer via the Greaseweazle then...

Read this from Ben Santer (very famous climate scientist for those who don’t know) about what NCAR means and what dismantling it will do.

Six toroids done, 13 to go! I'm building a QMX+ transceiver from QRP Labs. Going well so far, and the soldering got better when I changed to a larger tip on the iron. This PCB seems to conduct heat away from the joint very quickly.

ICYMI, Last Friday I released the, pay as you feel, magazine issue 3, with @FreeCAD @kicad @inkscape and @oshwassociation tutorials. Between them we can get anyone up and running with tools for design! Links to the issue are in this pinned toot!

A pile of purple pcb's. These are ch32 breakout boards packaged into a right angle ruler that also doubles as a business card and were made in Issue 3 of SOURCE magazine using KiCad and Inkscape.

@pmdj @kris_of_pnictogen Perhaps Make: Electronics by Charles Platt? It starts from the basics, and uses experiments to introduce new things. The experiments are often circuits assembled on breadboard, it sounds like you already might have the equipment. I fact-checked this book and test-built some of the circuits, and I like it a lot.

Very nice article about saving academic data, digital sovereignty, and some criticism re lack of transparency:

I tried Valvo EF95 tubes, and also Chinese 6J1 tubes. Both kinds work. With 12V anode voltage the EF95 felt louder and nicer, increasing the voltage to 30V made the 6J1 sound good too.

Vacuum tube radio progress: got decent reception of several medium wave AM stations: BBC radio 5, Radio Caroline and a Dutch one. I learned to stay away from switching power supplies, all I tried were so noisy I couldn't hear anything else. With a linear supply the sound is pleasant, but could still be a bit louder. #radio #diyelectronics #vacuumtube

@dasistdaniel I got one from c64psu.com, and I've been happy with it. They ship from Poland if I remember right.
Keelog supplies also seem to have a good reputation keelog.com/power-supply

Another thing, modern (flat) TVs often don't like the analog tv signal from a C64, you may have to get an analog-to-HDMI converter too.

@field94Mop I wish! That would have been a radio expedition in style. But it's the box of the telescoping antenna. I did bring coffee though.

2025-02-16

I did my first POTA attempt today, activating Vondelpark in Amsterdam (NL-0166). The batteries for both my radio and laptop lasted longer than me in the quite chilly park. I got 13 QSOs on FT8, using a QDX and a telescoping vertical antenna. I was hoping to find a picnic table, but had to make do with just a bench. Lots of people in the park, two passers-by were curious about the antenna.

@trcwm I see, cool idea!

2025-02-15

@trcwm Nice. That looks like a good circuit board for radio experiments! Like the deadbug style but more tidy. Do you recommend them and do you know where to get them?
