I was just happy to see that @joss passed 2500 published papers sometime in the last couple of weeks!

This is a nice demonstration of volunteer-run diamond open access succeeding, over about 8 years now.

And we seem to be accelerating, with a bunch of new editors.

Accepted papers per month for this year:
Jan 41
Feb 38
Mar 47
Apr 37
May 51 (a new record for a month!)
Jun 41 (so far)

Ever wondered whether fast direct solvers are compatible with Quadrature by Expansion, a method for the evaluation of singular layer potentials? Wonder no more πŸ™‚ In arxiv.org/abs/2504.13809, we offer an algorithmic recipe, analysis, an end-to-end error model, and some weighting tricks, the latter two applicable beyond QBX, along with numerical experiments. πŸŽ“ πŸ“–

The Computer Language Benchmarks Game has updated to Chapel 2.2, whose 'Allocators' module enabled a new binary-trees version nearly 4x as fast as the previous. This closed the gap between the geometric mean of our fastest entries vs. that of C and .

Meanwhile, only inhabits a similar space in terms of code compactness & performance as Chapel.

I'm ready to talk about @joss at #force2024 in 10 minutes, including some comments on how JOSS works with the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure (POSI) as well as issues we've had with scholarly gatekeeping organizations (e.g. Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed Central)

A viking, bearded and helmeted is pictured with the caption "Pick your battles. Pick fewer battles than that. Put some battles back. That's still too many battles" as if giving advice to someone shopping for battles.

Sad 😒 to hear that Champaign-based game developer Volition is shutting down. Descent (their break-out success from 30 years ago) was one of the defining games of my youth (yes, LAN parties! 😎 ) and... perhaps contributed to my ending up in CS at UIUC.

Ever been irritated that Fast Multipole Methods require lots of special, problem-specific code for efficiency (e.g. specific to the Coulomb potential?) My student Isuru Fernando has fixed that for you: arxiv.org/abs/2305.17867
