In & near my area of expertise, I see a pattern that some experts save themselves time using GenAI, and more & more novices get led astray by it (and then waste experts' time finding & fixing their mistakes).

I take this as yet another sign that neither experts nor novices should be using it.

I’ve been advising and guiding youngsters who express an interest in #CS, from time to time, for some forty years. In all that time, I’ve never met an undergraduate who planned to study theoretical CS. A few of those kids did become theoreticians in due course, but that change of direction usually occurred in graduate school.

I, for one, am sick of this early emphasis on the vapid coding trade. High schoolers should be exposed to the foundations of CS. But that’s easier said then done; I’ve never met an AP CS high school teacher who could do that, and even if there exists such a teacher, no high school student would take that theoretical course.

There are a couple of interview questions that I save only for the serious contenders of technical leadership level #IT positions. For the practice-minded candidates, I ask them to explain in detail how a "computer" boots up from cold-and-dark and goes on to perform computations. For those with a theoretical bent, I ask them to articulate their philosophical views on the meaning of the word "computing".

The canonical answers to these questions are all there in the #CS undergraduate textbooks. Yet, these questions afford the candidates the freedom to delve into the topics, as deeply as they choose. In other words, these are not the kind of questions designed to elicit rote answers from the candidates, but to assess their perspectives.
