2/ around 1:30 am, less than a mile from the summit, I hear someone call and see a light.

A pair of hikers got lost for hours after the summit. Panicked after dark, they called SAR and hunkered down under a rock. No alpine layers, no emergency blankets, wet running shoes and socks left freezing outside the garbage bag the hikers were wrapped in.

They needed help but weren’t in immediate danger. I gave them all my extra layers, a water bottle since theirs froze, told them to lay on their shoes and socks to dry them, and that I’d lead them down on my way back.

It took a LOT of convincing when I got back for them to get up and come with me (instead of staying there for minimum 12 hours before SAR would arrive to do the same as me).

Led them off the summit and across trail crest in the dark, then down the chute and out through morning. Stressful because they just had sneakers, microspikes, and trekking poles. No boots, crampons, ice axes, or helmets. 🫣💀
