Current conditions in Redwood National and State Parks include numerous road and trail closures. Area roads leading to the various park sites also are experiencing the effects of recent storms. Definitely check the weather and road conditions before heading to the park over the holidays and be prepared with a full tank of fuel, rain gear, boots, food, etc. This image, taken over the weekend, shows the reds and greens of forest vegetation enhanced by recent rains. The two large trees in the foreground are each more than ten feet wide. Bright green needles appear on the tree on the left and a few ferns can be seen as well.

Petit aperçu du Pays Basque côté français, destination des vacances de septembre dernier. Vraiment une très belle région. Pas que ça soit une surprise hein, mais ça reste marquant même quand on s'y attend.

Despite my #sunpci project being on hold due to two dead #sun ultra 10s (RIP). A SunPCi II arrived today!

I really love how it came with a disposable anti-static wrist band. That's such a great idea to prevent accidents, especially for this era of electronic equipment!

When I get a SPARC machine with PCI this will be the next RE target. I think these "chimera" models are quite similar to the "penguin" models, technically, but only one way to find out!

The days are finally getting longer from here on out. It's been hard to schedule runs when you're not a morning person. Running in pitch-black cold isn't exactly pleasant, so I've been sticking to the treadmill during winter.

Sunset Solstice over Stonehenge

Explanation:
Yesterday the Sun reached its southernmost point in planet Earth's sky. Called a solstice, many cultures mark yesterday's date as a change of seasons -- from autumn to winter in Earth's Northern Hemisphere and from spring to summer in Earth's Southern Hemisphere. The featured image was taken just before the longest night of the 2025 northern year at Stonehenge in United Kingdom. There, through stones precisely placed 4,500 years ago, a 4.5 billion year old large glowing orb is seen setting. Even given the precession of the Earth's rotational axis over the millennia, the Sun continues to set over Stonehenge in an astronomically significant way.

The sun is setting across a field in a clear sky. In the field are the famous stones of Stonehenge. The Sun peaks out from the center of the stone array.

Two images of the Earth. The upper shows the reflected solar radiation on the winter solstice 2004 with the most light reflected in the southern polar region and the least in the northern polar region. The lower shows the reflected solar radiation on the summer solstice 2005 with the most light reflected in the northern polar region and the least in the southern polar region. In both images, the mid-latitudes show a complex gradient of swirling reflected solar radiance depending on latitude and surface conditions.

It is the winter solstice. A time of celebration and joy and life and rebirth. I hope to celebrate with a fire and mulled wine and to be surrounded by family.

Today was the #WinterSolstice in the #NothernHemisphere and so tonight will be the longest night of the year. The #Sun actually reached its southern-most pass in the #sky a little under six hours ago. So, #Winter has started.

Of course, if you’re in the #SouthernHemispere, replace “winter” with “summer”, “northern” with “southern”, and “night” with “day”.
