This is my politics account. Here I mostly read, rarely “like”, and almost never post. I have a separate science account where I am much more active

If the hackish and quisling management at @cbsnews got control of @cnn, their owners @paramountco would order them to run old episodes of Petticoat Junction rather than, you know, do news like this. Let me stress again: They are not interested in anything but toxic pablum and lazy both sides nonsense and defocusing people from the real facts.

Why are there only parallel universes and not perpendicular universes? You don’t know how they parked their universe.

To think -- some of us spent all that time and effort in school studying science, history, and math. We thought deeply about ethics and society.

Now, our government and businesses are run by the kids who cheated on all the exams. Our law enforcement and defense are run by the kids who skipped class to drink behind the bleachers. And our health care and science policy are run by the people who ate the crayons.

This is personal: "Appointing the 4 Horseman of the Scientific Apocalypse — RFK Jr. as Sec of #HHS, Dr. Oz to run Medicare & Medicaid services, Dr. Makary as head of the #FDA & Dr. Bhattacharya to run# NIH — has signaled the end of any serious approach to biomedical #science & public health by the federal govt. Together & separately, they have taken a wrecking ball to our august scientific institutions that were previously considered to be the best in the world."

How can we test theories in neuroscience? Take a variable predicted to be important by the theory. It could fail to be observed because it's represented in some nonlinear, even distributed way. Or it could be observed but not be causal because the network is a reservoir. How can we deal with this?

Increasingly feel like this isn't a theoretical problem but a very practical one that comes up all the time. I'd be interested if anyone has seen anything practical that addresses this.

OK. With all that's going on int the world, this might not be the most important bit of news right now. But @mitpress has announced that my book, How Not to Study a Disease, will be on the Penguin Random House Backlist Marketing program. On April 21st, the ebook will be discounted to $1.99, and marketing will run with Kindle and BookBub.

I love how the abstract puts a reverse spin on the results. They conclude that cognitive decline does not predict amyloid deposition. For me the data is really telling us in no uncertain terms that amyloid does not drive cognitive decline. Did I miss something?

I keep going back and thinking about that moment during the state of the union when Green was kicked out. The democrats chose to stay seated throughout Trump's address as a demonstration of discontent. Yet, when Green was confronted and forcibly removed, the democrats remained silent and seated. They chose not to stand up - both literally and figuratively - for one of their own, all to keep up an easily ignorable theatrical gesture.

It's just such a simple yet perfect depiction of liberalism. Prioritization of optics at the expense of others and calling it solidarity. Instead of supporting another democrat, they chose their performative demonstration that ultimately undermined their collective strength. Democrats and liberals will not save us or protect us from fascism. They will sell us out and continue to appeal to the oppressors, like they always do, both in the White House and on the streets.

47-year-old Nate Vance, a former U.S. Marine, joined Ukraine’s forces in 2022, saying he "saw history being written."

"JD is smart, but what they did to Zelensky was a dishonest ambush. Being relatives doesn’t mean I’ll accept him aiding in the killing of my comrades." – Nate Vance.

When I was in graduate school, nothing in the world felt more important to me than publishing a paper in the scientific literature. It was not about getting a job or competing with my peers. It was about being part of something vastly larger than myself and profoundly meaningful human history.

I still remember the feeling of peace I felt when I made it happen. Even if I never achieved my dreams of being a research scientist, I had been able to contribute, in however tiny a way, to a community stretching over countless generations and striving toward a common and profoundly meaningful aim.

Thinking back on all this I better understand the pain I feel to see science under devastating attack here. It’s not just about my livelihood or my university. It’s about my identity. And it’s about a pursuit that I see as standing along with art, literature, and music as among our highest callings.
