❗️New publication just dropped❗️

Colleagues of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency just published the #benchmark of a longer temporal study on #circular #consumption in NL. Clearly there is room for improvement in *do* and *say* behaviour here..

❗️New Dr. in the house! ❗️

Congratulations to
Lisette van Beek (@Utrechtuniversity ) for successfully defending her thesis "Persuasive Pathways" by telling us models create mental lock-in and we need to open #futures #thinking beyond techno-economic analysis.

The closing panel featured about 40 years of @IMAGE_PBL intellectual ancestry with the IMAGE "OG" project leads and incubators. Shared lessons learned of 40 years @IMAGE_PBL:

➡️ Mind boundaries and interactions (Leen)
➡️ Publish! (Rik)
➡️ ..But don't make it main calling: seek relevance (Tom)
➡️ Support next gen sci at IPCC (Rik)
➡️ Look at social legitimacy (Jan)
➡️ Become activist & maintain sparkling optimism! (Jan)

eight lessons from reviewing 1000 biodiversity cases related to transformative change

bionext-project.eu/news/what-c

Firstly, case studies that address three or more nexus elements, appear more likely to achieve transformative change. This means that by addressing biodiversity, in combination with other nexus elements (climate, water, transport, energy, health or food), you may be more likely to succeed with transformative change.

Secondly, creating impact through other dimensions, such as social, political, and economic change, is always a strong indication of the transformative potential of case studies.

Projects that ensure cooperation between communities, civic, business, and public bodies are also more likely to be long-term successes in achieving transformative change. Shared governance and cross-collaboration between public, private and community bodies has also similarly emerged as important factor.

It’s true, transformative change remains difficult to identify and define! Transformative change often isn’t mentioned in the case studies and there is no universally agreed criteria for “what is a transformative change case study”.

Most case studies that have created transformative change set out to ensure that the impacts of their change were viable for the long-term. Long term planning is essential if you want to achieve transformative change.

There is also limited focus on transport and energy within case studies: these are nexus elements that would benefit from further research.

Trying out #ChatGPT (chat.openai.com/chat) & having a little science conference talk with my new AI buddy:

"As a language model, ChatGPT's output is not completely reproducible [..] When given the same input, ChatGPT will generate slightly different text each time.

It's important to note that the reproducibility of a model is an important factor to consider when using it in research, as it allows other researchers to independently verify and replicate the results."

Just out! Our paper in @NatureEcoEvo@twitter.com mapping critical natural assets, 30% of the planet's land & 24% of coastal waters that would sustain 90% of nature's contributions to people in every country. Collab led by @UMNIonE@twitter.com w/scientists around the world nature.com/articles/s41559-022

🐦🔗: twitter.com/beckyck/status/159

Critical natural assets are the natural & semi-natural ecosystems providing 90% of current levels of nature's contributions to people. This figure shows critical natural assets for local benefits (optimized at the country scale), including: nitrogen retention, sediment retention, pollination, fodder production for livestock, timber production, fuelwood production, flood regulation, access to nature (for recreation & gathered products), riverine fish catch, marine fish catch, coral reef tourism, & coastal risk reduction. Climate regulation benefits were included in a separate analysis (optimized at the global scale).
